Imagine living your life in complete darkness not knowing where your next step will lead you or if you are about to encounter danger. The blind receive help from Seeing Eye dogs. This allows blind people to be safe and not get themselves into dangerous situations. Without Seeing Eye dogs, blind people wouldn’t get around as easily. Seeing Eye dogs, through their strong characteristics, intensive training and physical help have a huge impact on the blind to enable them to lead productive, independent lives. The dog’s behavior and personality have an effect on the person they are helping.
Seeing Eye dogs are incredibly intelligent and obedient. “They must understand and obey commands. The owner must always be in control. However, guide dogs must be intelligent enough to know when to disobey a command that puts the owner in danger” (March-2). They learn many commands that have to be memorized in order to help the blind. Obedience and acting well behaved have to be present in any environment that they are in. “A guide dog must be able to come to the handler's workplace or be in public places without creating a disturbance” (Harris). An obedient guide impacts a blind person because it reflects how well the owner takes care of it. If the behavior is poor at work it could potentially get the blind person in trouble. The attentiveness and hard-working nature of a service animal are important in directing a blind person.
Hard work and concentration are characteristics that are mandatory in order to aid the blind. “Guiding is very complicated, and it requires a dog's undivided attention” (Harris). Service dogs are another form of Animal Assisted Therapy. For example, a person that is deaf can own a hearing dog. “In these circumstances, a hearing dog can offer ameliorative benefits aside from alerting the caregiver to the phone ringing. A dog, being a full-time companion, ends up being a conversational partner that responds behaviorally to the statements and moods of other people nearby” (Fine 67). The dog becomes more than just a pet, but acts as a family member that takes full-time care of you.
My report is going to be on guide dogs. In this I will show how the guide dogs are used in everyday life. I will show how they are trained to help the blind. I will show you about guide dogs and service dogs. I will also show you the dog breeds used for guide and service dogs. In this I will show you the importance of guide dogs to the disabled.

Dogs can help children cross the street, lead the blind, alert the deaf, and they do so much more. Many of times, an adult might focus on the problem that doesn’t need requirements. An adult might focus on the problem that a child is socially disabled and by focusing on this problem, they may not even see how this child is trying to cross a busy street or might be trying to talk to someone that they shouldn’t. A service dog prevents the child from going out of sight and many of times can lead a child out of danger or avoid it in the first place.
Animal-assisted therapy is often confused with service dog; it is two completely different type of usage of animals, which usually are dogs. It is commonly misunderstood because animal-assisted therapy and service dog are working animals with individuals with disability although according to (Hart-Cohen, 2009) service dogs is when an individual with disability is in need of help in order to function in daily life such as answering the door, crossing the street and the list goes on. While animal-assisted therapy animals are trained to offer comfort companionship, and affection to those in need in different situations such as courtrooms, nursing homes, schools, hospitals, and other places (Hart-Cohen, 2009). When most people think of blind people, they tend to picture a person with dark sunglasses, a seeing eye dog, and a walking stick. These are stereotypes and obviously do not remain true in the case of all blind people. In Raymond Carver’s short story “Cathedral," the main character is jealous and judgmental of his wife’s friend who happens to be a blind man. It is the combination of these attitudes that leads to his own unique “blindness." It is through this initial blindness, that the character gains his greatest vision.

According to NIB study,which analyzed potential reasons why walloping 70 percents of blind people are not employed, they found that “hiring managers, most respondents (54 percent) felt there were few jobs at their company that blind employees could perform,...Forty-two percent of hiring managers believe blind employees need someone to assist them on the job;.. 34 percent said blind workers are more likely to have work-related accidents.’ These statistics shows us the the condition of being blind is associated with being incapable, clumsy, and unproductive in the workforce.
