School In A Nutshell As a daughter of immigrants and being an immigrant myself, I knew I had to work hard to become somebody in life to prove that my parents’ struggles were worth every second. My journey began at the age of eight years old, I had to pick up everything and leave my life behind in El Salvador to begin a new one in California. The transition was not easy though what made it possible was learning English and being able to adapt. The idea to continue my education after high school involved my role models who planted in me the importance of education and encouraged me to go through the enrollment process; although there were financial challenges, I have found my way into college. He did not have kids of his own at the time so he tried to involve me and my brothers with as much things as possible. To me, his accomplishments and awards he has received for helping the community gave me motive to also become successful in a foreign country and give back. I have always wanted to feel that sense of reward after doing something good which is why I have decided to major in Nursing. After many community presentations about his background, job description, and collaborations with the community, my uncle really engraved how important education is and the advantages it brings. While I wish finding my way around the school was my only problem, I was faced with some internal challenges. As the school year started, my friends slowly started to leave to these “big shot” colleges or simply move away to other community colleges. I, too, wanted the complete “college experience” somewhere in Arizona or across the country; yet I felt stuck and unaccomplished. I also felt jealousy which could have been because I did not get to decorate my dorm room.While talking about dedicating hard work to your education, Gina Rodriguez said “Just remember, during those times of fear and doubt, that you are right now discovering your true strength.” And in those times of doubt, I reminded myself why I could not just move and leave everything behind. The root of my challenges and concerns are my family. As I enrolled as a full time student, my family was fighting some financial problems which created marriage troubles for my parents. I could not leave at a time like this. I knew it was not the first time my parents were talking divorce but somehow I knew it was best to stay. In the primary years, I frustratingly assimilated and forced myself to learn English and American culture like many other immigrant children. I missed my home in Mexico; but, unfortunately, returning voluntarily was not an option, because it is this country that gave mami the medical care she needed. The toughest years in my academic journey were in high school when I began to comprehend the significance of being an illegal immigrant. First, there was the stress caused by high expectations and the difficulty of earning outstanding grades 100% of the time. Secondly, there was the complication of not having a social security number and the barriers this posed when pursuing a higher education. Lastly, there were insensitive and threatening comments from educators who, instead of inspiring me to go against the odds, imposed fear and anxiety after confiding in them my immigration status. Affected by my family, my background, and everything around me, I was born in a family who is the first generation to get here. My grandmother, and my parents, along with some other relatives, moved here in search of better opportunities, like those from other countries for the same idea. They started out fresh but had a hard time to get started, when I was little, I assumed it had to be somewhat easy, but for people who do not know English it is like starting from scratch, but they did well, they’ve made it.
Society puts too much pressure on high school students to attend a 4-year college right after graduation. Though this is an attainable goal for some, a great majority of students are not fully prepared for the demands of college. 4-year schools require an incredible amount of maturity and preparation, leaving very little room for mistakes. Schools often overlook this aspect because their main goal is to get as many students into 4-year college as possible. This is a great goal to have however they send students off to college who aren’t ready to be handle the difficult of their courses while being away from home. College takes a serious toll on people, some are able to strive through and come out on top and some suffer from outside family issues, can’t financially keep up with school or just lack the skills that are needed for higher education. College sometimes just isn’t for everyone; and students can’t handle it all like I couldn’t myself.
My father immigrated to the United States when he was ten years old. He worked hard in his childhood and strived to become the first member of his family to attend college. While I was growing up he had only two requests for me: that I only do what I truly enjoy doing and that I don’t forget my Indian heritage.
College was such a big ordeal around this time last year! Many students had no choice but to think about it every day and I was surrounded by friends and classmates thinking about the same thing. Am I sure this is the school for me? Do I really want to move away or just stay near my mom? Until this past spring I hadn't thought much about what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go for college. One day in the spring the junior class had a meeting in the auditorium about taking our ACT test and college plans. After that meeting I realized I needed a change, getting into college wasn't going to be a breeze, kind of how I had treated high school. Although I always considered myself to be fairly smart, I never had put much effort into school, but after seeing the facts and requirements to get into schools, and especially after hearing Ms. Rice saying "In today's world, the way to a successful future, is choosing college as your future", I knew I had to make an adjustment for the better so that college could be my future.
I spent much of my high school career researching colleges and universities. My mom and I traveled to well over 10 different colleges and universities in 4 different states trying to find the “perfect” school for me. By the end of my junior year of high school I had finally found the ideal school, or so I thought. The school was small, environmentally friendly, new, beautiful, diverse, and just happened to be located 1,000 miles away from home. Everyone at my small high school knew that I was going away to school and it was a huge deal because the majority of my classmates were going to in state schools. I traveled to the school multiple times for orientations, to meet my roommates, and to make sure it was the “perfect” school for me. I’m a hardworking citizen who is currently a college student with Immigrant Parents. The amount of disadvantages for a family are indeed absolutely immense. Some of these disadvantages involve low income, college struggles, and health sacrifices. Motivations is certainly a key factor of my drive and has played a huge factor in my life.
Immigrants, regardless of immigration status, have a rough life once they come to America. They face language barriers, employment problems and the lack of educational resources. Migrants with proper documentation have the access to the college education that many without the legal documentation do not have. As time progresses, I hope that these laws will change. Anyone that comes to America on good terms should have the opportunities that every other American has. Educators must be understanding of immigrant students’ situations and must be willing to encourage them so that they can apply and succeed in post-secondary education.

My entire life I have always been viewed as the black sheep of my family, and out of 14 grandkids, I was always the one that nobody ever thought would amount to anything. My father was a high school dropout, and everyone assumed that I would be an alcoholic drop out, just like him. I never had a wonderful childhood where everything was laid before me to choose from; instead, I have had to fight and scrap for every little bit of approval from everyone in my family, and my peers. All of my Aunts were school teachers, and my Uncle was a chemical engineer, and they were able to send their kids to college as soon as they graduated from high school. It has taken me almost a decade to be able to send myself. I was never able to achieve good grades when I was young. I tried and tried to make good grades, but trying on your own with no help can be like the blind leading the blind. I was born in a country where education is limited to only those families that are privileged. My father immigrated on his own to the United States from China because he knew that there were endless opportunities for me. My parents explained to me that if we were to remain in China, they would have no resources to provide me with a sufficient education and I would have had to overcome extraordinary obstacles. Even if I were to attend college in China today, it would be extremely difficult to pursue a career of my choice. My father knew this because he saw the struggle firsthand with himself and with those around him. He was the first in my family to immigrate to America. Like most immigrants, he had little to no personal belongings. He was able to establish a foundation to support both my mother and I when we both arrived to the states a year later. As the end of my senior year in high school approached, I had to make an important decision. What school was I going to spend the next few years of my life at? When the financial aid packages arrived, I was torn between two colleges. After sitting down with my mother and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both schools, I came to my final decision. It seemed like a year ago I was imagining what college life would be like and suddenly before my eyes, I would be a college student in a matter of four months.
There are many important aspects in my life that can be applied in college. Over the years, I 've learned a bountiful of life strategies.
