The New Standard Time
Changing the time of the clocks twice a year has become an antiquated chore that requires millions of people to set their clocks forward one hour in the spring and back one hour in the fall. Though there may be slight adjustments that are made from time to time, Standard Time is practiced 1/3 of the year from early November until mid-March, and Daylight Saving Time is practiced 2/3 of the year from mid-March until early November. When Daylight Saving Time starts in March, it creates long evening hours for the summer time, which creates more daylight for outdoor activities that people like to enjoy. There are some states that do not practice Daylight Saving Time, such as, Arizona and Hawaii (“Daylight Saving Time”). The studies that are meant to prove that Daylight Saving Time actually saves energy, are mixed. In her article “Five Myths About Daylight Saving Time,” Feltman writes, “The California Energy Commission found the energy savings to be a paltry [insignificant] 0.18 percent at best.” With Congress extending the Daylight Saving Time by four months in 2005, the thought was that people would use less electricity since there would be more daylight in the evening; this would lead to more outdoor activities and limiting the need for energy consumption. After this extension, Indiana did a study that found “a slight increase in energy use . . . costing the state’s residents about $9 million; the research believed that more air conditioning in the evening was largely to blame” (Feltman). In 2016, people are spending less time outdoors, and more time inside; this leads to an increase in air-conditioning usage, as well as, television watching and computer gaming. In today’s economy, fiscal policy plays a vital role in influencing the financial direction and economic goals of the United States. Furthermore, government spending and taxation are two main economic activities that influence a nation’s economy and are generally referred to as the fiscal policy. Not only does the fiscal policy help determine a nation’s budget, but it also determines how much resources need to be allocated to help achieve their economic goal. Therefore, the fiscal policy has many functions and consists of allocating, distributing, stabilizing and developing the nation’s economy.
Ben Hogan, a famous golfer, once said, “ the only thing a golfer needs is more daylight”. Daylight saving time not only impacts the world’s golf games, it also affects the economy, outdoor activities and comes with many health concerns.Daylight saving time(also know as DST) was used as a way to save energy and have more natural light in the summertime, but it was as affected and it also came with many consequences to the countries and states that still use this time. It was first used in the USA in 1918 and has been on and off for many years , but now DST is used seven months out of the year. There are two times during the year we change the clocks. The first Sunday in March, we “spring forward” with the clocks and the second Sunday in November we “fall back” one hour. However, daylight-saving time should be abolished from the rest of the world that uses this time throughout the year.
Just like all of Earth’s green, society too has found a simple way to use the sun to its fullest potential. Daylight Saving Time is a function that has allowed us to enjoy longer summer days simply by moving our clocks an hour ahead in the spring. This method had became something to consider since Ben Franklin idealized it. Of course it's not the same for everyone, depending on where you are may change when Daylight Saving Time occurs. Although some may say Daylight Saving Time is pointless, it is vital that DST has its benefits.
On September 11th, 2001 at the World Trade Center 2,749 people were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were crashed into the north and south towers. 412 of them were rescue workers who came to help. 147of them were passengers or crew members on the two flights. 102 Minutes by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn, the title referring to the time between when the first airplane hit the north tower and the south tower collapsed, tells the stories of what is happening inside the Twin Towers on September 11th and the fight for survival under unimaginable conditions.
“When the going gets tough, the tough take a nap.” This statement by Tom Hodgkinson perfectly describes the solution to the life of the average American high schooler, who wakes up early, rushes to school, and undergoes several grueling classes, only to later participate in extracurricular activities and return home to complete homework. Due to all these activities, only a vast minority of teenagers obtain the amount of sleep they need in a night; Tom Hodgkinson’s quote proposes a solution to this problem. Daylight Saving Times is something we do here in the United States every year, where we move our clocks back an hour in the fall, and move them forward an hour in the spring. Daylight Saving Time was established during WWI in order to save energy for war production by taking advantage of the later hours of daylight between April and October. Although it was said to save a lot of energy, today it is extremely difficult to determine the energy saved by this, and it is possible that little or no energy is being saved by Daylight Saving. Which poses the question: Is Daylight Saving necessary in the United States? There are many pros and cons to it, but the cons outnumber the cons, and something should be done about it.
Daylight savings time has been something that individuals born post World War I have always had implemented in their lives. Many people never really consider the point of daylight savings time until it rolls around twice a year nor do they realize the original purpose. There are approximately 70 countries out of 196 that observe daylight savings time, at least in a portion of the country. Daylight savings time has had many changes throughout the history of it, but is it time to move on? Although there may be advantages such as more natural light, but disadvantages such as the disruptions with our circadian rhythms outweigh the advantages.
Trends in time off with pay can vary from public (i.e. not for profit) and private (i.e. for profit) sector organizations. Usually public sector employees are governed by benefits that separate vacation, sick, personal days, jury duty, funeral leave etcetera. Private sector employers primarily utilize Paid Time Off (PTO) that lump all of the instances of needing time off in a time bank that each employee is responsible for maintaining. Time off with pay is a topic that is regularly evaluated throughout organizations today. In this paper I will be discussing the paid time off benefits that are offered to public employees.
My mom has always been known as the one who is constantly late to everything because she would do everything at the last minute. It would irritate me because I had to wait around for her to pick me up from somewhere because she would forget and then wouldn't answer her phone when I called. After experiencing the annoyance and frustration countless times, I vowed that I would always be punctual.
The definition of procrastination is: the action of delaying or postponing something. Tim Urban, who conducts a speech called Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator for TED in 2016, explains that every human is a procrastinator- some more than others. I agree with everything he says in his speech because I can connect with every piece of evidence he claims, mostly including that there is a “Panic Monster” that pops up in your brain when you are close to a deadline and haven’t gotten anything done, especially when it comes from why I’m always so stressed out about school. There are two different kinds of procrastination: deadline and non-deadline. (Urban, 2016) Everyone that I have ever met is a procrastinator
Do you ever wonder why you choose not to do something until the last minute? Sure you have! It has happened to everyone. I mostly believe that there are negative attributes to procrastination, more so than good attributes. Traits of adjourning include how rewarding a task may seem, affecting how hard a person will work on it, and laziness. Some may see procrastination as healthy, such as active procrastination. Although good effects appear from procrastinating, stress is a larger effect. Stress causes a few illnesses. Procrastination is a bad thing that generally occurs in everyone when short-term benefits are the only outcome people see.
Keeps you organised: Order is needed to effectively manage time. Knowing what and how to prioritise certain things makes a difference otherwise things can easily spiral out of control and the essence of time management is lost.
Time management is needed in everyday situations. Time management is very important to accomplish all tasks in your life, whether goal oriented for one’s self or for business purposes. You can avoid stress and burden when you set your priorities in a well-structured manner. When thinking of time management, people usually just think of personal time management. Loosely defined as managing our time to waste less time on doing the things we have to do so we have more time to do the things that we want to do. Time management includes your personal life and business life.
My professional development topic was time management. Ironically, I missed the first professional development assignment. Due to poor time management skills, I did not get the assignment turned in before midnight when it was due. The last 2 semesters at Ivy Tech, spring and summer 2016, I have had poor time management skills. Procrastination is a thing I have always struggled with, and something I want to work on.
