Reducing Standby Power
Introduction
Reducing standby power is something that can help reduce energy demand. Human beings can easily help reduce standby power by doing very simple things. If the energy demand is lowered then it is better for the economy, and environment. The economy benefits because with the decrease of energy demand, then less money needs to be spent on building new power plants to produce more energy. The environment benefits because with less power plants, there is less emissions in the atmosphere with lessens the threat of global climate change.
What is Standby Power?
Standby power is electricity that is being used by appliances or other devices while they are not being used. This is because the power is being consumed by a power supply which converts AC into DC. This happens through the use of black cubes which are sometimes called vampires. AC is the abbreviation of alternating current and DC is the abbreviation for direct current. The difference between the two is that AC is pulsed electricity that switches polarities every fifty to sixty seconds and direct current has a constant polarity.
The unused power is being converted to direct current because the device is still absorbing electricity even when it is not in use. Batteries are good examples of this because if they are in a remote they are constantly giving out energy even if it is not being used. There are different categories of standby power. The first one is called no load. No load means that there is not power being supplied to the rest of the appliances.
Products that are examples of no load is an external power supply which is a DC/AC power supply. The next type of standby power is passive standby. Passive standby means that the applia...

The first method of insuring a correct reading is obtained is through using one wattmeter on a balanced load. Using this on an unbalanced load will lead to an inaccurate reading for power. To complete this method a reading with a wattmeter connected from a single line to neutral via the voltage probes and in line with the line on the current probes. By multiplying the value of the wattmeter by three the total system power is found.
According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, DST increases overall energy consumption by “approximately 1 percent” (Kotchen) and rises to 2-4 percent in the fall. The use of air conditioning, television, lighting, and other appliances causes the residential energy demand to

Instilling this new way of energy usage into off-grid communities will inevitably increase the state of living for those in cities and other well-populated areas. The change to renewable energy sources could drastically lower the pollutants currently being dispersed into the atmosphere by coal mines and other harmful power options, increasing the supply of renewable energy would allow us to replace carbon-intensive energy sources and significantly reduce U.S. global warming emissions. a 25 percent by 2025 national renewable electricity standard would lower power plant CO2 emissions 277 million metric tons annually by 2025—the equivalent of the annual output from 70 typical (600 MW) new coal plants (“Benefits of Renewable Energy Use”). Electricity production accounts for more than one-third of U.S. global warming emissions, with the majority generated by coal-fired power plants.
The module AC/DC is directly related to the career path of the electrical linemen. In the module i learned about two types of electrical current, alternating (AC), and direct current (DC). In direct current (DC), the electric charge (current) only flows in one direction. Electric charge in alternating current (AC), on the other hand, changes direction periodically. The voltage in (AC) circuits also periodically reverses because the current changes direction. Electrical lineman work on power lines and other thing that have (AC) or (DC) current depending on what they are working on. Lineman work on electrically energized (live) and de-energized (dead) power line. They may perform a number of tasks associated with power lines, including installation or replacement of distribution equipment such as capacitor banks, distribution transformers on poles, insulators and fuses.
There are 180,00 families in America living a sustainable lifestyle and roughly around 1.7 billion people worldwide living without depending on the grid. (Palameri 1; Perez qtd. in Wood 1). The number of Eco villages, sustainable and intentional communities are rising across the nation as more people are discovering that they possess a strong inclination to live in the same manner as the Amish. This phenomenon is becoming a progressively popular choice for people from all walks of life. Not only are environmentalists and survivalists escaping the city life in efforts to live off the grid, but single families and people who are seeking to explore a simplified lifestyle are also joining the trend.
Electricity blackout is a shortage of an electric power or long term loss of the electric power in the particular area. Cause for an electricity blackout is in an electricity network, which includes faults at power stations, damage to electric transmission lines, substations or other parts of the distribution system, a short circuit or the overloading of electricity
Based on Laurel Nesbit, a program assistant in the Office of Sustainability here at UF, our campus manages to utilize 470,000 Megawatts of energy annually. This figure is generated from all the energy-consuming gadgets that operate on our campus on a daily bases. These gadgets include computers that are left turned on over the night even they are not in use, copiers, and the fume hoods in our laboratories. Admittedly, the success and the health of wellbeing of the students is contingent upon some of these equipment. For instance, the laboratories need the fume hoods in order to keep the experimenters safe. Instead of casting these necessities away, we can develop alternatives which will be capable of generating energy in order to compensate for the electricity that we endlessly
Electricity and electrical components are a major part of our lives today. Our lives pretty much come to a halt if there is a power outage or if our electrical devices stop working, sometimes we even start panicking because we are so dependent on these components that we cannot afford to lose them and their importance and use only increases as time passes. We all use these electrical devices and also electricity itself but most of us do not think about the math and physics that works behind all of these things.
When picking an energy resource for the topic of this paper, I bounced around a lot of ideas. Then it occurred to me that I should write about what I will be living with in about a month. My mom just finished designing and building our earthbag, solar, off-grid house, a four-year endeavor. I will soon live in a place powered by one of the most common alternative energy resources, solar energy, so I should learn more about it. At our new house, we have two stand alone pedestals with six 170W panels on each pedestal, making for a 2040W or 2kW solar system.
AC and DC literally stand for Alternating Current and Direct Current. Direct Current is very convenient and is used in many modern day utilities. For a circuit with DC the current is constanly in one direction, while the voltage remains constant. This makes for a simplistic circuit, for example a flashlight, The batteries are a source of electrochemical DC power and . However AC is called Alternating Current because the voltage changes from negative to positive a given number of times a second, this is also described as the frequency of the power. An example of this would be a motor ran by a hand crank. The inversing of charges creates a sinusoidal graph which looks something like figure 1 (given in radians). This makes for an unsteady power source and can often times be warped from the sinusoidal shape. So the main difference between AC and DC is the way the energy is transmitted.
