I am now beginning to understand the oppression that people of color go through to stand their ground in this country. I’ve always witnessed the hate and the discrimination on the national news and even locally. I see the racism and the hurt that those born with color have to go through just because of their beautiful complexion. Racism is a belief in which one race believes that they are superior over another due to their characteristics, more specifically, skin color. This is all because of the past history that has leaked onto modern society. People of color have always been oppressed and this has constructed the foundation for many mindsets today. Living in a world where social injustice is common and knowing that my ancestors have gone through suffering and have also fought for our unity saddens me. Being born a woman of color, I understand that I am oppressed. I understand that thoughts flow through others minds the moment they lay eyes on me just because of the color of my skin. “What is she up to?” “Where is she heading?” “Is she ever going to comb that hair of hers, it looks a mess?” I am not the one to assume, but I have experienced this, not specifically about myself, but about my fellow people of color. Have I taken action? Well, according to Beverly Tatum, I believe myself to be a passive racist to that situation. A passive racist is one who hears a racist slur, yet has no response to it or takes no action. The opposite of a passive racist is an active racist, which is one who is very blatant and responds to the slur bluntly. I am also a victim of being an active racist and so are many others. Tatum compares these terms to that of an airport conveyer as she states, “I sometimes visualize the ongoing cycle of racism as a moving walkway at the airport. Active racist behavior is equivalent to walking fast on the conveyor belt… Passive racist behavior is equivalent to standing still on the walkway. No overt effort is being made, but the conveyor belt moves the bystanders along to the same destination as those who are actively walking. Some of the bystanders may feel the motion of the conveyor belt, see the active racists ahead of them, and choose to turn around…But unless they are walking actively in the opposite direction at a speed faster than the conveyor belt- unless they are actively anti racist- they will find themselves carried along with the others” (Tatum 128).
