The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is a play written by the well-known William Shakespeare. The play contains many themes that greatly help to determine the aspects of a character; such as how they act, talk, and they ways they feel. One of the main themes that occurred continuously in this play and one of which readers can distinctly witness are the psychological roles that shape the characters. A psychological aspect that is portrayed in Hamlet is the role of insanity. Insanity is a form of illness which is characterized by abnormal mental or behavioral patterns ("Insanity." Wikipedia). Through this many people seem to go into a state of madness where they do not know themselves, act differently than they normally do, even commit to certain deeds that may harm themselves severely, such as cutting or committing suicide ("Insanity." Wikipedia). Another psychological feature that can be seen is the role of depression. Many events have occurred in the play that has caused a great deal of distress in the minds of the characters. Some are able to hide what they feel and seem as if they are happy, or contempt to what is happening around them. While on the other hand, others clearly show their form of depression in many difficult scenarios. Lastly, another example of how the characters in the play Hamlet have been influenced through psychological matters is by suicide. Suicide is the involvement of one committing the death ("Suicide." Wikipedia). There are many reasons that can be concluded as to why one would want to give up their lives; but it all comes down to the fact that they are not satisfied of who they are as a person. When creating the play The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Shakespeare used four main themes that helped to reflects the outlooks on the characters. Two female characters Ophelia and Gertrude experienced distress throughout the play. At the time when feminism was at its highest and women really didn’t have a right to express what they felt, stress was just a key factor in everyday life. Both characters felt out of place due to the interactions between people around them. Hamlet himself being they major benefactor letting his strive for revenge get the best of his and the people around him.

Hamlet experiences hardships so horrible and they affect him so greatly that he is unable escape his dispirited mood. In speaking what he feels, Hamlet reveals his many symptoms of depression, a psychological disorder. While others can move on with life, Hamlet remains in the past. People do not understand his behavior and some just assume he is insane. However, Hamlet is not insane. He only pretends to be mad. Because Hamlet never receives treatment for his disorder, it only gets worse and eventually contributes to his death.

The most common manipulation used to influence human behaviour is known as psychological manipulation. Psychological manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the perception or behaviour of others through underhanded deception. In the tragic play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the author demonstrates the use of manipulation through the two main characters Prince Hamlet and King Claudius. The character fulfill their needs through dishonesty and learn that the effects of manipulating other has serious consequences that is able to manifest into a powerful force that consumes all aspects of one’s self. Just like how Hamlet uses his actions to manipulate the people around him to avenge his father’s death and how Claudius uses his words, actions, as well as his power as king of Denmark to manipulate people into fulfilling his needs. Through these characters the readers learn that by putting up a false mask of deception one loses their self as the lies take over.

One of the central theme’s throughout Shakespeare’s Hamlet is the question of madness versus sanity. From the first few scenes of the play, one cannot help but question the way that various character’s throughout the play think and behave. In line with Sigmund Freud’s ideas concerning the Id, Ego, and Superego, we see that various characters’ behaviors are clearly defined by these distinct personality structures although not always in the way they are traditionally expected to. Gertrude and Hamlet both find themselves eventually losing control of their lives as they all give way to the Id portion of their personality. It is this downfall that will continually come across as the madness so central and destructive throughout the course of the play.
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the main character, Hamlet, is often perceived by the other characters in the play as being mentally unbalanced because he acts in ways that drive them to think he is mad. Hamlet may very well be psychotic; however, there are times when he “feigns insanity” in order to unearth the truth surrounding his father's death. This plan seems to be going well until Hamlet's mental state slowly begins to deteriorate. What began as an act of insanity or antic disposition transitions from an act to a tragic reality. After studying Hamlet's actions, one will notice that as the play progresses, his feigned insanity becomes less and less intentional and devolves into true mental illness.

Craving power, safety, and comfort, she depends on men for her position and control. Seeming to have poor judgment, she never expresses self-reflection throughout the play and just seems to be a bit oblivious to everything, ultimately resulting in her death as an unaware victim of a game she ensnared herself
The Complex Character of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Upon examining Shakespeare's characters in this play, Hamlet proves to be a very complex character, and functions as the key element to the development of the play. Throughout the play we see the many different aspects of Hamlet's personality by observing his actions and responses to certain situations. Hamlet takes on the role of a strong character, but through his internal weaknesses we witness his destruction.
In Shakespeare’s dramatic works there is no room for the heroic or the strong woman, and therefore many of his plays can be perceived as being antifeminist. Often he portrays women as weak, mad, sexual, and as even witches. Hamlet is no exception. The only women in the play, Ophelia and Queen Gertrude, are given confined and limited roles. These roles are from a male-dominated viewpoint and only add focus to the male characters instead of incorporating the insight and the impact of the women as well.

It is expected that Hamlet would be suffering from some emotional issues as result of these catastrophes. Shakespeare uses vivid language, metaphors, and imagery to highlight how Hamlet’s madness influences several important aspects of his life including his relationships and the way he presents himself.
