There are many concerns a mother may have during childbirth. These may include birth plans, possible complications, support systems, and the cost of childbirth and raising the child. In this paper we will look deeper into the excruciating costs during childbirth.
Out of all the places in the world, the United States is the only country that bills item per item during the pregnancy experience. Many items that were grouped together 2 centuries ago and were covered under the general hospital fee are now broken out, leading to more bills and extremely high costs. There are separate fees for each delivery room, birthing tubs, certified midwifes, and nights at the hospital, typically resulting in thousands of dollars (G. Ridic, Gleason, & O. Ridic, 2012).

When it comes to both pregnancy and childbirth this country uses a philosophy that aims on having a natural process instead of a medical procedure, unless needed for high-risk cases. They turn to midwives, not obstetricians, during their pregnancies, overall reducing the cost of childbirth. Couples have the option of having their baby in a hospital, but one out of three mothers choose to have their baby home. If the child is born at home in the presence of a midwife, mothers receive a Kraampakket, which is a home delivery kit (Green 2013). However, for babies born in the hospital, Mothers and babies are allowed to leave as soon as 4 hours after having a baby as long as there are no complications. This reduced hospitalization stay drastically cuts down on the price of childbirth (DutchNews.nl Staff, 2014).
The Dutch healthcare system includes universal healthcare coverage with the choice of additional private plans. Once a baby 's born, all insurance companies pay for at least a week of home care visits called kraamhulp. Though often a life-saving procedure when necessary, the risks and complications associated with cesarean delivery are a cause for alarm due to the documented rate increase of this procedure across the globe. Many studies have revealed that cesarean deliveries increase the incidence of maternal hemorrhage and mortality and neonatal respiratory distress when compared to vaginal deliveries. As a result, current research suggests that efforts to reduce the rate of non-medically indicated cesarean sections should be made, and that comprehensive patient education should be provided when considering an elective cesarean delivery over a planned vaginal delivery.
