Time is another big struggle for college students. I know the feeling of applying for classes because it’s tough to decide on if there’s time to get from one class to one another; also if there’s time to get a bite to eat. Wendell Berry’s “The Pleasures of Eating: In What Are People For?” article suggests taking pleasure in eating a few ways to help anyone be a healthier eater, but “time” is an obstacle for the solutions. First off, both Berry and actually Pollan suggest students grow their own food in gardens. Specifically, Berry says to “Participate in food production to the extent” and “You will be fully responsible for any food that you grow for yourself, and you will know all about it. You will appreciate it fully, having known it all its life” (Berry 2). Also, he talks about the term “agricultural act” which is another term for the process of growing foods; all starting from seeds and not coming from factories. Then, Pollan suggests that the garden is a solution to health and “The food you grow yourself is fresher than any you can buy, and it costs nothing but an hour or two of work each week plus the price of a few packets of seed” (198). It is true that growing foods on a farm show that there 's no bad “chemicals” added in the food which starts all out as seeds. If only it weren’t for the fact that again, college students just don’t have time. Along with that, some students live alone in an apartment complex and, I’m sure not too many apartments have an outside area big enough for a private garden. As a college student myself, I find it easier just going to the grocery stores and farmer’s markets to get my food; then again, I still live with my parents and they pay for the groceries. ... middle of paper ...’s really in the food. The dependable place to find food is as I said earlier in my essay, the farmer’s market. When you buy food from there, you know that it all started from a seed, not in a factory. Lastly, Carly Schuna’s article titled “Healthy Eating Habits for College Students” gives out some tips too. She suggests “stick to a budget at the grocery store by buying healthy nonperishables like rolled oats, dry beans or brown rice, in bulk. Take time once a week to make a big batch of a healthy, easy meal, like veggie chili, and then freeze individual portions to eat in the coming days” (Schuna 4). I suppose getting simple ingredients like oats can be useful for making other dishes. It does depend on if the student can find the time to make the foods if they’re living in an apartment. I hope this manifesto was able to guide some college students in the right way.
