“Beauty comes from within.” This aphorism is one of the best known quotes to dissuade people from becoming too obsessed with their looks. Self-confidence controls a major part that contributes to the poise a person possesses. Despite this general saying to accept who you are on the outside, developments in the medical field have made it possible to improve how you view your external beauty. Because self-improvement has always been sought after, plastic surgery is an inevitable development of society that should not be frowned upon as it has evolved into a luxury that benefits the economy, despite popular opinion that our culture has become negatively obsessed with outward appearances.

The history of plastic surgery exemplifies the idea that humans will always be searching for self-improvement; plastic surgery has just become one of the ways that we may be able to achieve this. Dating back as early as 800 B.C., facial reconstruction was a technique still used as a beneficial medical treatment for injuries. However people have the most problem with plastic surgery due to a mistaken belief that the surgeries render you fake, after hearing the word “plastic”. Yet this is not the case as the word “plastic” originates from the Greek word “plastikos”- to mold or give form, (“History of Plastic Surgery”). The evolution of plastic surgery has confirmed that self-fulfillment is something that should have been expected of our culture as they turned to cosmetic surgery. The search for the Fountain of Youth by Spanish explorers verifies the idea that eternal youth is a desire that many people hold in high esteem.
