Personality is a part of every person that becomes inherent to who they are. It drives people to think, behave, and interact with others in particular ways (Miller, Lynam & Leukefeld, 2003), and these thoughts, actions, and relationships with others are perceived as being normal or right, from their point of view. Their behavior is just their way of life, it is who they are. However, for some, these behaviors become distressing, or impairing in some way, and this is when problems arise. Personality disorders, according to Lillienfeld and Piotrowski (2014), are disorders in which a person’s actions, such as in communicating with others, showing emotion, or forming relationships become detrimental to themselves or to other people. It is generally understood that the most prevalent characteristic of the disorder is blatant disregard for others, whether it be their health, emotions, or rights. As a result, those diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder tend to display behaviors that reflect this indifference. For example, they may exploit others for their own personal gain without feeling remorse for their actions (Black 2015). These individuals also tend to be irresponsible as they feel no guilt for not behaving in ways that the culture they live in expects them to. According to Donald Black (2015), this makes it extremely difficult for these individuals to keep steady employment, as well as maintain any meaningful relationships. He also mentions that the inherent disregard these individuals possess tends to make them extreme risk-takers. This leads to them sustaining life-threatening injuries more often, as well as being victims of accidents, violence, and carriers of several STD’s. As one would expect, as a result there are also high mortality rates for those diagnosed with antisocial personality
