Personality disorders have always been viewed as a possible category for a psychological disorder. However, in the new edition of the DSM, it will be getting its own diagnostic category. In viewing personality disorder, one can only agree that it should have its own diagnostic category. The reason that these changes are being supported is because of the causation, diagnosis, and treatment of personality disorders. A personality disorder is an unhealthy group of mental illness (Personality Disorders , 2013). These thoughts and behaviors cause a series of problems in a person’s life. The disorder has often been linked to destruction in social, occupational, and an overall functioning of life (Soeteman, Verheul, & Busschbach, 2008).The person has often had problems associating with other people and managing stress (Personality Disorders , 2013). Personality disorders are consistently noted in a person that has obsessive-compulsive disorder (Butcher, 2010). The causes of personality disorders are still unknown as of today. However, there are theories of the causes of personality disorders are but not limited as being neglect and heavy burden (Soeteman, Verheul, & Busschbach, 2008). Neglect can be bought on by a person that does not take care of him or herself. It is hard to diagnosis someone with a personality disorder unless it is companied by some other form of disease for instance diabetes (Soeteman, Verheul, & Busschbach, 2008). The person may not take care of him/her self causing symptoms to manifest. If the person allows this to happen, it is believed that the person may have other issues then just the disease. Social burden have often attracted scientific attention of how people are about managing its demand (Soeteman, Verheul, & Busschbach, 2008). Today, trends may be hard for some people to keep up. There is social media, blogging, fashion and different beauty styles that were not concerns for previous edition of DSM like they are today. Some people may try to keep up with the trends but may quickly realize how stressful it can be changing with each tren. Diagnosing a patient with a personality disorders where often evaluations done by a clinician. The clinician would listen to the importance of interpersonal experiences and observing the patients behavior in a consulting room (Westen, 2001). This was normally done in one session, if the patient informed the clinician of harming himself. The clinician would diagnose the patient as a borderline personality disorders.

In a person’s life, they may encounter and be face with many challenging circumstances or situations that may deeply affect them. It may make a person feel like they are a failure or even cause heartbreak of some kind. These situations may cause a person who once was so outgoing and happy to become detach from the outside world and avoid interaction with people and relationships. A new study has shown that about 31 million Americans has a personality disorder (Davis, 2017). Personality disorders and mental illnesses are viewed by the general public as similar attributes that are equally harmful. However, when one delves into the diagnostics and patterns of the individual disorders and illnesses, it can be seen that there are major differences between each one. There are many levels of severity of the effects each disorder or illness has on society as a whole. They range from affecting only the individual on a solely personal basis to affecting a large amount of people on a highly violent level. Generally, it is found that mental illnesses have an influence on an individual level while personality disorders have an influence on a widespread level. As in every medical topic, there are outliers, or cases that are far outside the expected outcome, but for the most part, illnesses have less far reaching effects than disorders. On the spectrum of the societal effects of personality disorders and mental illnesses, the obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is actually a mental illness, is on the lowest level in terms of widespread consequences; just above this illness is schizophrenia which has the ability to affect more than the individual unless treated; the narcissistic disorder has farther reaching effects in society, such as in bureaucratic situations, than the two previously mentioned illnesses, placing it higher on the spectrum, and last, but not least, the schizoid personality disorder has proven to have the most wide spread consequences in the form of both emotional trauma and violence allocating it the highest level.
From the moment a person is born, his or her personality begins to take shape. As they grow and develop, they may become extroverted, introverted, kind, strict, or take on any number of traits that will define who they are. However when certain traits, such as lack of empathy, recklessness, and anxiety, seem to cause strange patterns of behavior that interfere with their daily lives and relationships with other people, it is easy to assume that some form of mental disorder may be the culprit. What many people fail to realize is that instead of it being a mental issue, it may be something in their personality. Although mental disorders and personality disorders are associated with one another, clinicians often pay more attention to mental disorders and disregard the fact that a personality disorder may have been the catalyst for the development of a certain mental disorder, such as depression and schizophrenia. If signs of a personality disorder can be identified in early childhood or adolescence, which is when they are most ignored, this will not only make the disorder more manageable for the person and everyone close to them, but it will also prevent the disorder from spiraling out of control and affecting their adult life.

There are a few differences between personality disorders and mental disorders. Personality disorders are a group of mental illnesses that consist of “long-term patterns of thoughts and behaviors that are unhealthy and inflexible”. (https://medlineplus.gov/personalitydisorders.html) People with this disorder have a series of behaviors that cause them to have severe problems with personal relationships as well as those relationships at work. People with these disorders have a harder time being able to deal with the everyday stressors of life. They also have problems with how they think and interpret certain situation. For the most part they don’t have good or solid relationships with others. It was interesting to learn that people with personality
Personality disorders fall under axis 11 of the DSM-IV. This section includes borderline, schizoid, paranoid, antisocial, narcissistic, obsessive-compulsive and avoidant disorders. There are several disorders included in axis 11 but for our purposes we will mostly be dealing with the disorders listed above. The most common personality disorder found among patients with eating disorders is borderline disorder. The majority of the research deals with borderline disorder, a disorder that is characterized by "vulnerability to a range of impulsive behaviors (overeating, shoplifting, substance abuse) and a history of self-destructive behavior, includi...

In conclusion, this is a common but very serious condition; many of the people who suffer from addictive personality disorder don't know it and it could very well ruin their lives. Any addiction is a serious problem but when one is susceptible to it, it automatically becomes worse. Throughout the course of this research paper, I pointed out facts that have been proven through science. Many people can lead a normal and healthy life while dealing with this condition if the proper support and help is presented. I hope to have helped raise the awareness of this illness and to help encourage people who suffer or think they may suffer from it to seek help so they could continue to live a healthy and addiction free life.

Some people are strict and do not take risks, while others are carefree and free spirited. In 1980, BPD had finally been recorded in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Ogrodniczuk & Hernandez, 2010). The World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD 10) includes 10 common forms of personality disorder there is a common connection between the personality traits of all. In the instance when one of those elements does not work correctly and is essentially dysfunctional warrant the diagnosis of personality disorder. There is a fine line between the diagnosis of personality disorder and a mental disorder, which makes it hard to diagnose at times.
The topic that I chose for this paper is Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. When thinking about psychology of personality as a whole, there are many different approaches, topics and dynamics that are associated with personality. According to Burger (2015), “personality can be defined as consistent behavior patterns and intrapersonal processes originating within the individual” (p. 4). The reason I chose obsessive compulsive personality disorder as my topic is because I find its contents to be interesting, the behaviors associated with the disorder are intriguing and it is a personality disorder that often times doesn’t get talked about.
