Since birth I’d been diagnosed with life-threatening asthma. It became a hinder to my life because it kept me from participating in sports and other outdoor activities in school. I was afraid to let others know what sickness I had because I thought since we were all from different ethnic groups they wouldn’t become my friend because of my sickness. This value became my weakness. This practice behavior I continue for the longest amongst majority diverse groups. Competency 2.1.4. explains how to engage in the social work practice engaging in diversity. This is what made me think deeper into majoring in social work practice. I slowly became aware of self- awareness and understood as a social worker I must shape my life experiences for myself and focus more on the patients. Competency #2.1.10a explains the effectiveness in social worker that’s amongst individuals, families, groups, and communities. This information is needed to practice competencies throughout the social work services. In the role of becoming a social worker in hospice car, empathetic and communication plays a vital role in the field. This reflection of feeling lets the client know how to grasp and understand their own actions. Judgements and personal opinions are not used when communicating with the client about their preferences regarding end of life. I have grown to appreciate diversity and I seek out opportunities that will increase my competency in this area. While working with diverse populations I have learned that diversity represents individual and human differences that impact how we problem-solve, work, and learn. Often times we sum diversity into three main categories, race, gender and ethnicity; however, diversity is expanding and we must include all aspects of diversity. There are several factors that distinguishes us and the dimensions of diversity may be hidden or visible. They may remain constant or fluctuate as life changes and they may not be easily defined. Social workers must embrace diversity as well as its dimensions and understand that diversity is multidimensional.
First I will reflect on the differences between moral and values and how it impacts human rights. Morals and values differ for each individual and in the social work field one may find in most cases that their beliefs conflict with their clients. In the National Association for Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, there are many standards a social worker should uphold in order to promote a healthy and helpful relationship with the client. One such aptitude is Cultural Competence and Social Diversity, which is in section 1.05 of the NASW code of ethics (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). There are three sections associated with this competency “Social workers should understand culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths in all cultures”. It is assumed that “social workers should have a knowledge base of their clients’ cultures and be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of services that are sensitive to clients”. As a final point “Social workers should obtain education” in order to understand cultural diversity and oppression in people (NASW, 2008, p. 9).
As a social work professional, you must take into account your own personal values before you can be an effective worker in this field. Social workers sometimes need to put their own values aside when working with clients who don’t share their same ideals. Clients are diverse and are not going to always have the same values that the worker has. Social workers need to be professional and adhere to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) guidelines when working with any client.
The following paper aims to discuss and analyze the way in which my personal values intersect with the values I hold as most important within the profession of social work. It would stand to reason that these values would stand on common ground; however, there are places where my personal and professional values diverge. These conflicts may prove to be problematic within my chosen career unless I find a way to prioritize my values, or find ways for them to work harmoniously with each other.
Among an array of Values from The Code of Ethics (TCE) of social work Value 1 dictates that as social workers we must respect the dignity of our clients and refrain from passing judgement onto them (Canadian Association of Social Work, 2005, pg.7). As a social worker, it is important to follow this value as it prevents the distancing of the client from the worker as the client will have a better chance of opening up to someone who does not instantly tell them what to do or reprimand them for their actions or non-action in their lives. Oppression relates to the TCE in that it says the social work profession’s main purpose is to raise their clients who are vulnerable, oppressed and/or living in poverty (CASW, 2005, pg.7). Values facilitates the decisions in recognising what is worthy and valuable, with this, weighs out the important and less important, when there is a conflict of values. Ethics is set of moral principles of values, and these contribute to individuals and what groups live by. Ethics consists of factors being culture, religion, and these continuously effect a person’s beliefs and ethics. As individuals continues to develop and there adapt different values with ethics. This is through past experiences and the expectations as our life pattern changes. Social work profession is evaluated by a whole set of guidelines, measures put in place by regulatory body, giving the movement to put in place new governmental laws and guides within this field.
The six core values of social work should guide and impact how social workers act and treat their clients. Dimitrijoska and Vladimir (2016) state that “[t]he social worker is responsible for his/her professional development and must continually work on gaining new knowledge and learning new methodologies (p. 55). Moreover, as I move forward in social work courses, I will need to take a few actions to ultimately become successful. I will need to do more research, whether it be scholarly articles or assigned texts. I would like to engage in my community by volunteering at more agencies, and making connections with the organizations and learning from social workers. The last step I would like to take is from this point forward, I would like to engage in mindfulness practices. There are certain ethics that social workers must follow and is a guidance for professional standard of work. However sometimes people are not aware of their own values, though the more fully conscious someone is about their values, the more people are able to ensure that their actions are consistent with the values.
