Introduction Personal values determine who we are as individuals. Whether it’s for the good or for the bad, values play an important role to our personal lives. Some people don’t have personal values set for themselves, and continues to live life as normal. It doesn’t necessary means they don’t value anything just means it could be for the wrong reasons. Since birth I’d been diagnosed with life-threatening asthma. It became a hinder to my life because it kept me from participating in sports and other outdoor activities in school. I was afraid to let others know what sickness I had because I thought since we were all from different ethnic groups they wouldn’t become my friend because of my sickness. This value became my weakness. This practice behavior I continue for the longest amongst majority diverse groups. Competency 2.1.4. explains how to engage in the social work practice engaging in diversity. This is what made me think deeper into majoring in social work practice. I slowly became aware of self- awareness and understood as a social worker I must shape my life experiences for myself and focus more on the patients. It’s okay to have opinions on certain things, but when it’s in a career that cares less about your values and more about the client’s values that’s the priority. Competency #2.1.10a explains the effectiveness in social worker that’s amongst individuals, families, groups, and communities. This information is needed to practice competencies throughout the social work services. In the role of becoming a social worker in hospice car, empathetic and communication plays a vital role in the field. This reflection of feeling lets the client know how to grasp and understand their own actions. Judgements and personal opinions are not used when communicating with the client about their preferences regarding end of life. It’s the families’ decision, most importantly the patient’s own decision on what they feel will be the most comfortable for them at their last stages of life. All in all, this competency is mainly about collecting and analyzing as much information as possible to find the proper strategy. When you speaking about personal values you must know that your values may different from others o the best result is to set aside your personal values and focus on the patient’s values. Sometimes this can be an issue when you focus more about your values and less on your patient’s value.
