Good evening, friends, families, fellow classmates, Curley staff, and all else who may be visiting today. I felt the need to distinguish the two separate groups, friends and classmates, due to the sole reason that almost all of you are not my friends, nor do I ever hope you will be. Quite frankly, it is not just that I simply not like you all, I actually dislike most of you. Do not take this too personal though, I am just very excited to finally leave all of you and go our separate ways, except for those who are going to the same college as I am, in which case I hope that we avoid crossing paths again. I stand before you tonight, not because I am the valedictorian, even though I am clearly intellectually superior to the majority, nor because I have been recognized as Curley man of the year due to a possible bribery or just the misguided judgements of whomever decides on this silly award. I am here because I am the only one of our class who can compose a speech that does not consist of the all too common, basic, and honestly boring graduation speeches that anyone and everyone could create, or so I thought. For example, always try your hardest and never settle for anything less than your best. I used to be one of those kids who didn’t apply myself to my fullest capabilities and look at where I am now, in classes where people struggle to do even the most simple of tasks. Now I am not referring to all of you, we are all smart in different ways, however it is very possible that some of you will never find out. Not all of my classes are like that though. There has been one teacher that has really pushed me to become a much better student, and that is Mr. DeMarco. Over these past two years, I have taken a College Anatomy & Physiology, as well as AP Biology. For 75% of my time taking those classes, I have maintained a barely passing average. Contrary to what was expected of me in that class, in this last semester, my grades have been showing consistent A’s. This improvement makes me thing two things. 1. It disappoints me to know that, if I only received that miracle towards my grades earlier, I could’ve been doing so much better than before, and 2. It makes me wonder how far I can get in this world now with my bolstered confidence in outperforming others in
As our time together draws to a close, I leave LHS with no further anecdotes of wisdom or quotes dealing with success; only the sincere hope that you immersed yourself in the essence of commencement. In Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, “I have a Dream,” he inspires the crowd to take a stand with the following words, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Clay felt like he had been quite for far too long, listening to Lula the Hyena harass him with her belittling words. Lula tells lies, is deceitful, and manipulative; these characteristics represent the oppressive white community. I will describe to you how Clay’s reactions, Dutchman, were solely based on Lula preying upon his weaknesses, like the troubles that the black race felt while battling Civil Rights.
The idea of Freedom can be seen in Collection 2 in the textbook. Freedom can be seen in the speech “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. in the ideas/rights he introduces to his country. Freedom, or the lack of it, is in of the graphic novel “of from Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi when citizens rights to dress are limited. Lastly, in the short story “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela lacks freedom when the government’s safety rule is to proofread all letter that go through the system to avoid their secrets being revealed or gossip about them.
Selma director, Ava DuVernay did a great job filming and creating the characters that played a big part in this story. Marching alongside King was Andrew Young who was portrayed by Andre Holland.
Protecting the wild life and natural environment has been a major issue for many years. Laws and restrictions put in place by politicians have played a major role in protecting the environment from oil drilling and big companies from destroying the environment. Jimmy Carter shows great example of persuading the people to not just sit back and watch the environment be destroyed, but to take action and help protect the environment.

To always think of the outcome of things and never be pressured into doing things you’re not comfortable with. Another theme is to always keep your head up, because things always look bad, but you need to step back for a moment, and look at it as a whole. That way you can wrap your head around things, and know it can only go up. Things may seem bad at first, but it may just teach you a lesson.
The opportunities offered me during my four years at County High have been amazing. I have begun to understand all the potential I have to live life. I don't believe it takes a trip abroad to realize all we take for granted here in Hometown, USA. However, amongst the clutter that fills our lives, seldom do we choose to stop and reflect. Today is one day we intentionally set aside for the sentimentality we rarely experience. In only a few months, many of the graduates in front of you will leave home for universities, travel, or jobs. Today is not only your day to acknowledge our accomplishments, but also a time for us to acknowledge all you have given us.
I would like to thank all of you for coming on such short notice. After all, 18 years hardly seems like enough time to prepare for graduation. In fact, as I stand up here and looking at all of my classmates, I wonder if I am ready to graduate.

Welcome to all of you who have come to share this special evening with us. My name is John and I am a member of the graduating class of 2012. Standing here tonight is a surprise to me and to many who knew me. At one point, after making some mistakes and losing my sense of self, I dropped out of school. With my parents’ urging me, I enrolled at Alternative High School. I came to this school with the hope that I’d graduate on time. I knew that I would have to change, so I set goals to achieve perfection and I achieved it. As many of you may know, I am now perfect in every way, shape, and form...
Family, friends, and educators, I would like to thank you all for your support in coming out today to commemorate the Hoover High School Class of 2015 commencement. However, your support today is not where the extent of our gratitude lies, it lies within each and every single day of hard work and motivation that you all put in for my classmates and for myself to be successful. You are the reason that we are able to walk across this stage, and I think it goes without saying that each and every one of them deserve a standing ovation.

Not only the campus is beautiful but the atmosphere around the campus is second to none. All the student, Professor, Faculty and staff are the nicest people I have ever meet.
