Mychal Taylor English Comp 1 The Connection When growing my mother has always told me "Do unto others only what you want to be done to you". This simple phrase has shaped my life in my family ever since then. I am the gopher, responsible one, and the ok guy in my generation. My role in my family is the nice guy. I am that guy who helps everyone no matter who you are or what you did. My family are the one 's who connect everyone by finding out how we as a family are connected and connecting us by various forms of communication. We are the connectors of our family who are trying to make us a better and more connected family. I am Mychal Taylor and these are my reflections on my family When growing up, My mother was a very important guide to me being a respectful young man. She has been the one who demands strictness and family involvement.Mom wants that sense of being a teacher and loves to teach her family She has connected her side of the family by researching many uncles and aunts on her side of the family. The people she finds often tell her stories of how they are connected to us. The are always trying to put them as good people seeing as we will tell the others about them. They try there best to do this with countless thing they do and say. My family wants me to be the best guy I can be. That person is always changing in their minds but always they say be who you want be. These words and stories I know are memories told from all family lines. I feel like the stories that come from my family that I know of are always stories that encourage me to become someone better, smarter and nicer than the person who told them the same words. Family defines people making them who they are. A person's family heritage, how their parents met and married, their parents’ occupations, their siblings, and their early lives play an important role in who they are and who they become. Every family is different and has different characteristics and members, but those differences are what make every family unique. Those differences combined with my family members’ experiences and the stories they have chosen to share are what makes this story exclusive to my family.
Napier and Whitaker maintain that every family is a society within itself regulated by its own distinctive culture, language, rules, and traditions. In The Family Crucible, the reader is introduced to the microcosm of the Brice family as they grapple with the politics of their own family system in order to solve the crisis that rules it. The idea of family is a central theme in Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun. Hansberry alludes to the Old Testament book of Ruth in her play to magnify “the value of having a home and family”(Ardolino 181). The Younger family faces hardships that in the moment seem to tear them apart from one another, but through everything, they stick together. The importance of family is amplified by the choices of Walter and Beneatha because they appear to initiate fatal cracks in the Younger family’s foundation, but Mama is the cement who encourages her family to pull together as one unit. The hardships of the family help develop a sense of unity for the Younger household.
A complete walk through of the home was completed. Mr. Avery and Ms. Martinez occupy the master bedroom. This interviewer was shown where the child would sleep. The room was fully furnished, including bed and closet space. Overall, adequate space was observed both inside and outside of the home. Furthermore, the home was safe. Working smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher were located in the home. The home is on about 20 acres of mostly grass and has a pond located in far front yard. No recreational equipment was found in the backyard, where Mr. Avery has a mechanic shop where cars and various tools such a BBQ pits are located. The family was advised to never allow the child to wander by himself outside and that they must accompany at all times, as he get solder and want to play outside. Cleaning materials were under the sink. No alcohol was viewed in the home. Medication was stored in a medicine cabinet in the master bathroom. The family owns 2 dogs, 1 female Sheppard mixed and one male laborer mixed. The female dog is fully vaccinated and spayed. When it comes to family I was raised to be respectful of my elders and those around me; however I was also taught to speak my mind when I did not agree. Growing up I met many people who were not allowed to say no to their parents or elders because it was disrespectful. I believe this trait helped me be more open with teachers and family overall. I was also raised to respect women, which is something you do not see often in American culture anymore. I was raised to open doors for women and let them have my seat. As a kid people do things because this is the way people are taught; once people grow up you realize showing people respect is the right thing to do so you continue to do so.
Everyone in the world belongs to a subculture. Each subculture has its own sets of traditions, relics, and artifacts. Relics and artifacts are symbolic, material possessions important to one's subculture. Relics are from the past; artifacts are from the present. These traditions, relics, and artifacts help shape the personalities of individuals and how they relate with others. Individuals know about these items through storytelling in the subculture. Families are good examples of subcultures. My family, a middle-class suburban Detroit family of Eastern European heritage, has helped shape who I am through story telling about traditions, artifacts, and relics.
In the past couple years, I faced emotions of loneliness, worthlessness and even depression. I spent those years trying to figure out what was the cause of these serious emotions and one of the answers that I stumbled upon was when I finally talked to a therapist about dealing with my depression. To me, family is the most important thing in my life. They always encourage me to be the best I can be and nothing more. A quote that I think describes family to me is one by Alex Haley that states, “In every conceivable manner, the family is the link to our past, and bridge to our future.” Through the stories I hear from my mother and grandmother, I have a clear link to my families past and the generation of women that led to me. All the values these women held close to them throughout the years have led to the formation of myself and my values. Over the past three generations, the women in my family have overcome oppression. My mother, growing up in a time where women could never have aspirations to be CEO’s or politicians, somehow came out stronger. She saw what she didn’t want for her future, and jumped at the chance to start a new life in America. No single model of family life characterizes the American family, despite ideological beliefs to the contrary (Andersen). My family couldn’t be labeled an “Italian family” or an “American family.” We are a mix of the two cultures and ideologies, which is what makes us different. I am the first women in my mother’s family to be born and raised in America. My great grandmother had a complete different childhood and adolescence experience than I yet we still have a common cultural base. Growing up in a healthy family, a child is encouraged to be more independent and are able to discover the world on their own, contributing to one’s uniqueness. One of the most important and essential things that everyone must have in order to live a great and joyful life is family. One must follow values to be successful in life, and one must also support their family to keep that success advancing toward the future. In David W. McCurdy’s article, “Family and Kinship in Village India,” it discusses the significance of how a successful family is formed by tradition, preparation, and patience. The article describes how kinship has the power to arrange marriages successfully, make families unite and assist each other, and teach and help one another agriculturally or economically.
Even though times get tough and family life can get stressful at times I know that I will always be welcome in my family. Each of the different experiences that I have do different things to make me feel more comfortable with my family. The road trips and driving in the car make me feel more comfortable around my family it lets me learn new things about them and get to know them better. Doing the same things as them make it much easier to relate to my family and if you can relate to someone then it makes you feel more comfortable and connected to them. Many of us have role models in our lives and to most people role models are athletes and movie stars, but to me a role model is much more. To me a role model is a person who has positively influenced someone in life, and is not a person filled with selfishness and greed. They help shape someone’s personality, and characteristics. They are people who someone can look up to for advice in a hard situation, and know that they will give those words of wisdom. They will never judge our past actions, instead only look to help because they really care. A role model is someone who we should never feel awkward talking to about our problems. A perfect role model for me is my mother. She is a wonderful human being. She’s smart, wise, ambitious, patient and such a loving person. There are no words that can describe my gratitude towards her, but through this essay I will describe some of her characteristics that makes her my role model.
My family is who I have socialized most with since they were the first ever people I interacted with. Family has had a large influence over who I am today because they are the people who I learned almost everything from (primary socialization). The reason I have such high morals and values is because of my family. By observing and taking from their behavior I was able to form my own values through nurture. Although they taught me a lot of beneficial things that make me a better person, I have also learned from some of my family members bad habits. My uncle always smoked around the kids, including myself, when I was younger and I never liked the smell and now I associate that memory with cigarettes and it makes me not have any desire to smoke whatsoever. I also had another uncle who went to jail a lot for selling drugs and other related things, and since I definitely did not want to end up in jail I now make smart decisions, and associate myself with people who benefit me. When I am asked what is my role in my family, I am lost in thought. Firstly, because of a paradoxical relationship between my family which means that my parents only want to do their own things but they still live together, I hold the opinion that I am the protector of my family. Secondly, I have two younger male cousins which are younger twelve-year-old than me. I watch and accompany them when they grow up and I want to be a good example in my family.
