Personal Career Goals

I love that the scope of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is so extensive because I have a thirst for continual learning and career development. I enjoy trying out different fields of nursing, evident by my varied work experience to this point. As a FNP I can continue to satiate this desire to try different fields. In addition to working in primary care I’d like to practice a mixture of the following FNP sub-specialties during my FNP career: endocrinology, pain management, surgery, palliative care, hospice, genetic counseling, education, and research.

Strengths I have to enhance the FNP profession

I have been focused on developing many of the necessary qualities for the FNP prior to the beginning of my nursing career until now. I completed my Certified Nursing Assistant during my junior year of high school and started working at a care center for mentally and physically handicapped children. Here I developed a love for the patients I served. One Sunday I was able to advocate for a 7 year old child with severely limited speech and cognitive skills. A staff member had told him his parents who lived out of state were coming to see him that afternoon. Shortly afterwards his parents cancelled. He was inconsolable, crying, thrashing on the floor, refusing to leave the facility’s main entrance; still waiting for his parents. I was able to sit on the floor with him, listening to him, holding him, and singing. My shift was to end shortly thereafter, but there was no one to remain with the distraught boy. I obtained permission from my supervisor to stay and ensure the boy’s safety. The FNP commits to stay as long as her patients need her, to truly listen and empathize with them.

...ductivity of having unprepared diabetic patients without their blood sugar data for analysis. I created a contract outlying my physician’s process, a list of office contacts, and which items to bring on the initial visit and for each subsequent visits. The FNP frequently wears the hat of a clinician and a businessman.

I currently work for an insurance company in the benefit determination team. I review prior-authorizations and clinical data for all types of procedures and labs. FNPs need to understand how billing, insurance, and laws affect them and how to work with and/or change them. I am exposed to this pertinent data daily. I was recently asked to fill the need as genetic testing specialist. I am taking a Useful Genetic course, reading a genetic text book, networking with genetic counselors and medical geneticists, and making templates to increase productivity.
