In the world of man, one would think everyone sees the world in the same way. That person would be greatly mistaken. The human brain is more complex than most can believe; some would say the brain is still a modern mystery. When it comes to psychology, the idea behind perception and cognition is usually through the psyche of a ‘normal’ individual. However, some argue that studying abnormal brains, or persons with brain disorders could help better understand perception and cognition. It is correct that unusual brains can perceive differently from a standard brain. These studies can only help the scientific field expand its understanding of the brain by encompassing all brains, including those suffering from disorders. The World Health Organization states that schizophrenia affects about 21 million people in the world. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder is known for its disruption of perception. This brain disorder is another disorder, like autism, that affects many people. To understand the perception of this disorder would only help us gain more information on the human brain. A large disruption schizophrenia causes is time perception disorders. Roy, Grondin, and Roy (2012) stated, “Previous studies generally observed that schizophrenia patients overestimate time and that their timing sensitivity is impared…” This phenomenon is well documented in the science community. It is known that schizophrenia is a major brain disorder. The use of studying the time perception of schizophrenics can help compare and contrast with the time perception of a normal brain. Having schizophrenia can be a major disruption in the victim’s life. All sense of normalcy can be halted as a result of time perception disruption. A schizophrenic can look at a clock, then look back an hour later, and the clock has not moved at all. A large reason time perception is so interesting to the science community is the effect it has on the schizophrenic. A time perception dysfunction can disturb motor behaviors or speech.
