“Sensation refers to the process by which the sense organs gather information about the environment and transmit this information to the brain for initial processing,” (Kowalski & Weston, 2011, p. 108). We have a number of sense organs which correspond to processes such as hearing, seeing and touching and relay that information to our brain through sensory receptor cells. These receptors respond to stimuli from the outside world and our inner world as well. The specialty area within the field of psychology that studies sensory limits, sensory adaptation, and related topics is called psychophysics (Lahey 2002). All this information tells us what feels hot to the touch or how certain things smell. In our team, we have members who need quite to be able to concentrate on their assignments while others need background noises to help them process information (personal communication, August 6, 2014). However, we cannot experience sensation without the ability to perceive and interpret them.

The auditory threshold is “the minimum amount of physical energy needed for an observer to notice a stimulus” (Kowalski & Westen, 2010, p.111). Every person has a different threshold and the stimulus can be both internal and external in origin. Multitasking or dividing attention is defined by trying to do more than two things at the same time. Just as with dichotic listening and auditory threshold, multitasking is different from person to person. Creating a cohesive team with these challenges in mind can be daunting. Trying to be a team in an online environment can be even more difficult. It is important to establish ground rules for studying and doing assignments that is beneficial to each member’s unique learning style.
