Benedict Cumberbatch (‘Sherlock’ fame) spoke these lines while portraying the character of one Stephen Hawking, an incredible human being. These words have been proved to be correct (or) epitomized again and again by a number of human beings over the years, all of them incredible themselves; not a significantly big number but there nonetheless! Over time we have learnt to use a specific term for all these rather incredible human beings, that one profound word being- ‘HERO’. What comes to your mind when you hear it? Perhaps a Bollywood or Hollywood blockbuster. As it turns out, this word is much more meaningful than that and a certain American Joseph Campbell even managed to propose a theory to that end, namely “The Hero’s journey”. Briefly, what the theory said was that there is a certain pattern which exists in a number of narratives found around the world, mostly in fiction and at times even our real world heroes’ stories seem to follow the very same pattern. In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype.
As the story comes to its conclusion, the hero has endured his hardships; he went from the one that started fights to the one that thought of what could make everything work. The human need to be relatable is unquenchable. We love to be able to see parts of ourselves in others, and to be able to feel like our idols are not untouchable. The Hero’s Journey format is one that can be found in almost any story, even in real life. Overall, it is the perfect recipe for keeping readers engrossed. Another place the journey has shown up is in Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and Odyssey by Homer. These two stories—one a biography, the other, an epic poem—are so effective in their storytelling, it is easy to see how authors today continue to use the same method to make stories that grab the readers’ attention. What makes them most alike, however, is the emotions and thoughts they have the power to provoke.
In this world that we live on there are a plethora of cultures and people but one thing that brings all these cultures together is a certain story base, the hero’s journey. The hero’s journey has been around for the longest time and many commonly known stories that we know today are based off of the hero’s journey.
The Hero’s Journey describes the typical adventure of the archetype known as The Hero, the person who goes out and achieves great deeds on behalf of the group, tribe, or civilization. After reading the epic poem The Odyssey, by Homer, and watching the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?, by the Coen brothers, they both show evidence of the Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey is based on Joseph Campbell’s A Practical Guide to The Hero With a Thousand Faces. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is projected as the “hero” while in O Brother, a man by the name of Ulysses Everett McGill can be seen as the “hero”. Elements of The Odyssey and O Brother are shown through the stages in the Hero’s Journey like the Approach to the Inmost Cave, The Supreme Ordeal, and Threshold Crossing.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.

Campbell also discussed this pattern in his interview to Bill Moyers which was later published as a book The Power of Myths. Heroes are found everywhere in the world. They are seen in movies, on television, in books, and in reality. A hero can be anyone, from a friend to a fictional character. When we were kids, we all had that one person we looked up to. Whether it was a princess, a celebrity, a fictional superhero, or a family member, we gave this person the title “hero.” We selected these people to be our heroes because they had specific qualities like bravery, strength, and intelligence, but not all heroes are required to have these qualities. A hero is someone who, based on perspective, can be found almost anywhere because they make sacrifices and do actions for the better of others.
