The increasing global population is a significant issue in the world. The population itself is an issue because there’s a finite amount of space on this Earth and eventually we’ll run out, but the main issue that comes with overpopulation is overconsumption and the mismanagement of resources. It is a real problem that cannot be overlooked. Overpopulation further leads to climate change too, which can completely ruin Earth if taken too far. Just to demonstrate how much of an issue this already is: the city of Sana, Yemen in 2010 ran out of water, and had to get it imported. Imagine running out of water because it can very likely happen within the next century or so.
The increasing global population has been a significant issue since the 18th century. In 1778, Thomas Malthus published “An Essay on the Principle of Population” in which he wrote on the future issues the increasing population could cause. There has been progress though. In 1968 the population growth rate was 2.1%, and now it is 1.2%. However, 1.2% is too much, and we must find a way to decrease it to 1.0% or slightly under or else the future generations are going to pay for our ignorance. The United States growth rate is 0.7%, and our population situation is definitely improving. However, we must find a way to decrease the growth rate in third world countries. No one knows the most effective and efficient way to do this and it must be figured out or else society is going to pay for it in the future due to a lack of resources from overpopulation. We must do the right thing as a society and create a new economic model that uses less resources, and helps to diminish global warming.
