In the epic poem, The Odyssey, written by Homer, a hero named Odysseus is unveiled. A hero is a person who takes charge, who is bold, confident, courageous, and loyal. Many debate whether or not Odysseus earns the title of a hero. Odysseus earns the title of a hero by representing many qualities such as: leadership, bravery, and determination.

Odysseus illustrates the quality of leadership. To be a leader, one must be loyal, strong, sharp, and wise. Odysseus demonstrates loyalty while he is trapped on Kalypso’s Island. Alone, angry, and depressed, Kalypso tempts Odysseus to fall in love with her, yet, Odysseus remains loyal to his wife and gives up the fine and tempting opportunity: “My lady goddess, here is no cause for anger./ My quiet Penelope-how well I know-/would seem a shade before your majesty/ death and old age being unknown to you/ while she must die. Yet, it is true, each day/ I long for home/long for the sight of home.” ( V, 224-229) Odysseus is far from his wife, alone, and depressed. However, odysseus stays true to his wife. As tempting as Kalypso makes it for Odysseus, he does not cheat on his wife. Odysseus displays loyalty to his crew as well: “He saw the town lands and learned the minds of many distant men, and weathered many bitter nights and days I his deep heart at sea, while he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home. But not by will or valor could he save them, for their own recklessness destroyed them all-children and fools they killed and feasted on the cattle of Lord Helios, the Sun…” Odysseus fights to save his life and to save his shipmates even though he knows that he can do nothing to save them. He remains loyal to his crew and tries to save them like a true hero would....

...time when Odysseus portrays determination would be when Zeus allows Odysseus to fall into deep slumber: “But while I slept, the crew began to parley:/ silver and gold, they guessed, were in that bag/ bestowed on me by Aiolos’ heart…” (X, 39-41) No matter how many times Odysseus fails; he always gets back up and tries again.

All in all, Odysseus possesses the many qualities of a hero. He is a great leader, very brave, and determined. Odysseus shows these qualities throughout the journey in which he is faced with many obstacles. However, Odysseus overcomes each obstacle by having confidence, courage, and wits. There are not many human beings such as Odysseus. There are not many people who would take on such tasks and obstacles to reach home. Many would refuse and stay on Kalypso’s Island. However, Odysseus is an extraordinary human being; a true hero at heart.
