Much like Lorraine Hansberry, Madeleine L’Engle believes that “the growth of love is not a straight line, but a series of hills and valleys.” Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes, Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire, and The Glass Menagerie, and Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias use the idea that even through struggles their characters show that love always endures. Although loving someone, who is not particularly loveable, is one of the most difficult parts of being human, it is possible by remembering that addictions can be reversed, blood is forever, and a ring is more than just an object. Steel Magnolias very own mother- daughter relationship between Shelby and M’lynn is one of a kind. M’lynn seems to be a nagging mother who wants her daughter to follow what she believes is right for a married woman to do. Before the wedding M’lynn expresses her concern for Shelby, continuing to be a nurse after her wedding; “Drum and I feel that Shelby should not work anymore after she gets married” (Harling 17). Shelby does not always agree with her mother’s ways, “I’m so anxious to discuss this topic for the nine hundredth time this week” (17), but she knows in her heart that her mother is just trying to do what is best for her. A mother’s love for her child is something that no one can imagine if they have not experienced it. Although M’lynn seems to be pessimistic about the “selfish” way of Shelby continuing to have a child, even after her doctors told her it would cause her medical problems, she is only looking out for Shelby’s best interest. Shelby knows that her mother would do anything to take care of her, and that her health scares M’Lynn. After her kidneys fail, M’lynn gives her daughter the chance to live a full life again by giving her one of her kidneys. Not only do M’lynn and Shelby have a blood connection, they now have an organ connection with M’lynn’s kidney being in her daughter’s body. When Shelby had her diabetic attack M’lynn knew exactly what to do in order for her daughter to overcome the event. Shelby is M’lynn’s only daughter; therefore, she would do anything in the world for her. Even though Shelby and her mother fight quite frequently over simplistic things their love for each other could not be stronger. Poe and Springfield’s approaches on love are like peanut butter and jelly, they can go together, but do not mix. While Poe is the fault of his disconnection from love, Springfield has no control over his love life.
In the movie, The Glass Castle, the young girl Jeannette Walls was played by three different actresses, Chandler Head, Ella Anderson, and Brie Larson, as she grew up throughout the film. Jeannette was the protagonist in the film and her parents, Rex and Rosemary, played by Actor Woody Harrelson and actress Naomi Watts, are the antagonists. The other characters that play a big role in Jeannette’s life are Lori, who is played by Olivia Kate Rice, Sadie Sink, and Sarah Snook, Brian, who is played by Iain Armitage, Charlie Shotwell, and Josh Barclay Caras, and Maureen, who is played by Eden Grace Redfield, Shree Crooks, and Brigette Lundy-Paine. Later in her life she married David, actor Max Greenfield, and then they divorced and she Married John, who was not mentioned in the movie.

Fairytales and modern day movies project a stereotypical portrayal of love, idealizing it and ignoring the not so happy ever after when the prince and princess go back to their castle. Walker and Salinger in their respective novels present the idea of love with much more verisimilitude without the traditional symbols of castles and titles. Instead, opting for a warts and all exploration of love, focusing on its utopian and dystopian elements. Walker’s ‘The Color Purple’ is a tale of a black woman who is driven to lesbian love due to the abuse undertaken by men. J. D. Salinger’s ‘The Catcher in the Rye’, similarly speaks of a sexually frustrated young man not able to fulfill his desires due to societal constraints. Both the novels encapsulate realistic elements of love like the healing and harmful effects it can have on humans; we see all the pure forms of love as juxtaposed through the plot line with the absence of parental love, love between siblings and homosexual love. But, through all of the toils begotten by both Celie and Holden, love is a constant. ‘’Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres’’.
Love caused his logic and sensibility to fail him, and provoked him to commit monstrous acts that destroyed many lives. Through analysis of “Happy Endings” by Margaret Atwood, it can be concluded that one of her many intended lessons was to show the value and the powerful effects of love. Atwood successfully proved this lesson by using powerful examples of both successful and disastrous relationships to illustrate the positive and negative effects of love. Atwood truly demonstrated what it is like to follow your heart.
Anton Chekhov and Ernest Hemingway both convey their ideas of love in their respective stories The Lady with the Pet Dog and Hills like White Elephants in different ways. However, their ideas are quite varying, and may be interpreted differently by each individual reader. In their own, unique way, both Chekhov and Hemingway evince what is; and what is not love. Upon proper contemplation, one may observe that Hemingway, although not stating explicitly what love is; the genius found in his story is that he gives a very robust example of what may be mistaken as love, although not being true love. On the other hand, Chekhov exposes love as a frame of mind that may only be achieved upon making the acquaintance of the “right person,” and not as an ideal that one may palpate at one instance, and at the another instance one may cease to feel; upon simple and conscious command of the brain. I agree with Hemingway’s view on love because it goes straight to the point of revealing some misconceptions of love.
During the two moves, The Glass Menagerie and A Raisin in the Sun some of the characters are strange and diverse, but the similarities and difference of their views, values, and problems, could be universal. It is universal since people all over the world have the same issues, thoughts, and reactions. Even in my life, finances, success, and family are of utmost concern. The characters in The Glass Menagerie are Amanda, Laura, Tom, and Jim. And the characters in A Raisin in the Sun are Mama, Ruth, Benitha, and Walter Lee. The characters I enjoyed the most is Amanda and Tom and Mama and Walter Lee. I would examine the mothers and the sons of each move.
In Toni Morrison’s Beloved, love proves to be a dangerous and destructive force. Upon learning that Sethe killed her daughter, Beloved, Paul D warns Sethe “Your love is too thick” (193). Morrison proved this statement to be true, as Sethe’s intense passion for her children lead to the loss of her grasp on reality. Each word Morrison chose is deliberate, and each sentence is structured with meaning, which is especially evident in Paul D’s warning to Sethe. Morrison’s use of the phrase “too thick”, along with her short yet powerful sentence structure make this sentence the most prevalent and important in her novel. This sentence supports Paul D’s side on the bitter debate between Sethe and he regarding the theme of love. While Sethe asserts that the only way to love is to do so passionately, Paul D cites the danger in slaves loving too much. Morrison uses a metaphor comparing Paul D’s capacity to love to a tobacco tin rusted shut. This metaphor demonstrates how Paul D views love in a descriptive manner, its imagery allowing the reader to visualize and thus understand Paul D’s point of view. In this debate, Paul D proves to be right in that Sethe’s strong love eventually hurts her, yet Paul D ends up unable to survive alone. Thus, Morrison argues that love is necessary to the human condition, yet it is destructive and consuming in nature. She does so through the powerful diction and short syntax in Paul D’s warning, her use of the theme love, and a metaphor for Paul D’s heart.

This chapter explores relationships, emphasizing on affection and understanding, attraction, and the power of a relationship.
