Much like Lorraine Hansberry, Madeleine L’Engle believes that “the growth of love is not a straight line, but a series of hills and valleys.” Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes, Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire, and The Glass Menagerie, and Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias use the idea that even through struggles their characters show that love always endures. Although loving someone, who is not particularly loveable, is one of the most difficult parts of being human, it is possible by remembering that addictions can be reversed, blood is forever, and a ring is more than just an object. Steel Magnolias very own mother- daughter relationship between Shelby and M’lynn is one of a kind. M’lynn seems to be a nagging mother who wants her daughter to follow what she believes is right for a married woman to do. Before the wedding M’lynn expresses her concern for Shelby, continuing to be a nurse after her wedding; “Drum and I feel that Shelby should not work anymore after she gets married” (Harling 17). Shelby does not always agree with her mother’s ways, “I’m so anxious to discuss this topic for the nine hundredth time this week” (17), but she knows in her heart that her mother is just trying to do what is best for her. A mother’s love for her child is something that no one can imagine if they have not experienced it. Although M’lynn seems to be pessimistic about the “selfish” way of Shelby continuing to have a child, even after her doctors told her it would cause her medical problems, she is only looking out for Shelby’s best interest. Shelby knows that her mother would do anything to take care of her, and that her health scares M’Lynn. After her kidneys fail, M’lynn gives her daughter the chance to live a full life again by giving her one of her kidneys. Not only do M’lynn and Shelby have a blood connection, they now have an organ connection with M’lynn’s kidney being in her daughter’s body. When Shelby had her diabetic attack M’lynn knew exactly what to do in order for her daughter to overcome the event. Shelby is M’lynn’s only daughter; therefore, she would do anything in the world for her. Even though Shelby and her mother fight quite frequently over simplistic things their love for each other could not be stronger.
