“My Life had Stood a Loaded Gun” by Emily Dickinson is a poem about a gun sitting in the corner. The owner notices him and takes him hunting in the woods. They are walking through the woods enjoying the day and the kill and return home to sleep the night away. The true meaning of the poem is one of a young man that is called up to serve his country and does so without any hesitation. “My Life had stood – a Loaded Gun – In Corners – till a Day The Owner passed – identified – And carried me away –“. There is a gun sitting in the corner not doing anything and here comes the owner and sees him and realizes that it is what he needs to do his daily hunting. They are finished and heading home after a great day of hunting together. And to share the kill together is better than if they were lying in bed together resting their heads on a deep fluffy feather pillow. We are now looking at a group of men that made it through the day and are getting ready to lay down for the night. They are watching each other’s backs as they are resting and knowing this is better than any peaceful night in a comfortable bed. “To foe of His – I’m deadly foe – None stir the second time – On whom I lay a Yellow Eye – Or an empathetic Thumb –“. The gun is a foe of any who try to harm the gun’s owner and the yellow eye is the tint of looking through the gun’s scope. The empathetic thumb is the hammer being cocked back and firing. We are now looking at a group of men in the military who are faithful and will attack any of those who are trying to harm their brothers.
