Speaking in front of a classroom full of strangers is harder than you think. I have already done two big speeches for public speaking: Informative speech and commemorative speech. Conducting a speech is more work than I would have imagined. I had to learn how to do speeches before I could be a presentational speaker. The three abilities for being a presentational speaker for my individual speech assignments were my understanding, my score, and what I learned.
First, I need to focus on my understanding for the individual speeches. When I did my informative speech I made sure I printed out the outline, the activity handout, and the citation too help me with the speech. I made sure I had all the information to help me on the speech. I reviewed the handout the best I could. When I made my speech proposal I had three different topics. I made sure one of them would work out for giving my speech. When I finally found one that fit the speech perfect I used that topic.

Renowned and engaging speakers have the ability to connect their values and ideas to greater causes and principles, leaving an enduring impact on the audience. You may be questioning what makes a great speaker? And what qualities and features contribute to the formation of a powerful speech? It is understood that a great speaker has the ability to communicate to larger truths and carve those truths on the audience’s hearts and minds as they surpass the context, place and time of the deliverance of the speech, and focus on conveying their ideas and values.
In life, we rarely have the chance for a do-over, but I feel like returning to college is mine. Throughout high school, my grades were never above average and until about a couple of years ago I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I began applying myself, the grades earned reflected that. This concept coincides to my public speaking ability. Many students, including myself, walk into a speech class thinking that it will be the Easy A of the semester and quite frankly I devoted a good amount of time and hard work to earn my A’s and B’s for this course. Overall, my public speaking growth in terms of listenability were influenced by the following: the strategy keys in correctly engaging the audience; the structure keys appropriate for a speech versus a paper; the support keys by continually engaging the audience; and finally the style keys by practicing the use of body language and reducing the verbal junk.
Over all this speech went relatively well but there is always room for improvement. I believe that the three most important aspects of this speech that I would need to improve and implement into my next speech would be the verbal citations, keeping my flashcards in order, and making sure that I plan out the time I need for my speech more carefully. Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.

These four methods are: manuscript speaking, memorized speaking, impromptu speaking, and extemporaneous speaking. Manuscript speaking is a method that has the speaker read from a manuscript to the audience. The problem with the manuscript method is that the speech may seem boring to the audience. After reviewing the recording of my speech on creating a comic strip, I noticed that I used many techniques to deliver my speech in a professional way, but I had also made many mistakes when I was presenting. What I thought I did well on my speech was using my voice which projected to classroom very well, even when I turned away from the class to use the whiteboard. Although I noticed when I was using the whiteboard, I tried to use keep my sentences and words short and simple so I would not always be facing away from my audience; however, I found that very counter effective since I seemed to rush through my demonstration part not taking the time to explain why the steps were very effective. Also, when I used my very own comic as an example to show to the class how very effective the steps where it showed that I was serious about my speech and gave them an insight that comic strips do not heavily rely on talent on art or writing.
I believe that public speaking is not an innate gift that only certain people have, rather anyone can be an excellent public speaker with a certain amount of practice, time, and effort. That being said, I consider myself an excellent public speaker. Since I was in the 7th grade, I have traveled across the state of Texas speaking to large crowds about the harmful affects of tobacco. From 7th grade until my junior year in high school, I was a state representative for the state of Texas; as such, our job was to publically speak about the harmful uses of tobacco to youth and adults alike. I have spoken to crowds of 10 people up to crowds of 700+ people. Truth be told I actually enjoy public speaking! However, the thing that does make me anxious about public speaking is the fact that I may leave a particular point out of my speech, or get my order of points confused. Likewise, I have been able to overcome that by speaking from the heart; by speaking from the heart I am not anxious about missing a valid point or skipping over material I have planned out.
Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.
Public Speaking has to be one of my biggest fears since I started college. I do not honestly, fully understand why it terrifies me. During Public Speaking this semester, I hope to figure out why I fear speaking in front of large groups of people. I hope to overcome the stress and anxiety that comes along with speaking in front of an audience. Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communicatiis important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.
Improving my communication skills has been a work in progress starting back in the early years of my life. I have always been my own worse critic. Usually beating myself down through interpersonal communication. Now as an adult I have made great improvements but still have trouble dealing with perception and self-image. Not being raised in an environment of positive reinforcement and poor communication in the workplace I have made it a point to change that trait in my own family and professional environment.
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. I personally believe there are 3 key characteristics that are essential to effective communication; the first is having a clear, concise message. In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. After acquiring such knowledge about the topic of the presentation the speaker will feel more confident, confidence is key in delivering speeches and other oral presentations because it makes the speaker look more credible and trustworthy.
