Ludwig Van Beethoven is known as one of the greatest classical composers to exist. He overcame much strife in life and it helped create his masterpieces. His popularity was at the height of the Classical and Romantic eras, but his music continues to inspire modern artists. Some of his most notable pieces are Missa Solemnis and String Quartet No. 14. His musical talent also helped pave the way for other great composers and artists. His early life helped pave the way for his music genius, but none it could prepare him for the struggles following becoming deaf in his later years. Ludwig Van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany and baptized on December 17th, 1770. His exact birthdate is not known. He had two brothers, Caspar and Johann, that grew up with him around his mother, Maria Magdalena van Beethoven, and father, Johann van Beethoven. His father, Johann, was a singer but his talent was wasted due to his alcoholism. Beethoven was rigorously taught music by his father so his talent for music showed early on. He wrote a sad letter to his friend, Franz Wegeler, in 1801 to tell him about his struggle of hearing loss. It is hard to imagine a musician going deaf but still continuing his career. By 1819, Beethoven was completely deaf and composed many great musical pieces, including “opera, six symphonies, four solo concerti, five string quartets, six string sonatas, seven piano sonatas, five sets of piano variations, four overtures, four trios, two sextets and 72 songs” (“Ludwig van”). He overcame his problems to create masterpieces for the public. His problems, however, affected his overall personality and made him quite irritable of a person.
