When one thinks of the word, metamorphosis, a high majority only relate the word to an insect. While it may seem like this story is only about a man who turns into a bug, it is much more than that. Metamorphosis, written by Franz Kafka, shows us a kind gentleman who was torn apart by the mundane life he lived who was crushed under the pressure of the expectations of his family. Gregor Samsa is the main character of this story; the single supplier of his family; he worked hard to succeed and help his family find peace. As Kafka wrote, “If I didn’t hold back for my parents’ sake, I would’ve quit ages ago. I would’ve gone to the boss and told him just what I think from the bottom of my heart!”(Chapter 1, page 5) These attempts were only rewarded with cruel
“Those had been beautiful days, and they had never come back afterwards, at least not with the same splendour, in spite of the fact that Gregor later earned so much money that he was in a position to bear the expenses of the entire family, expenses which he, in fact, did bear. They had become quite accustomed to it, both the family and Gregor as well. They took the money with thanks, and he happily surrendered it, but the special warmth was no longer present.”(Chapter 3, page 35) He felt the only way to really be free and find himself is to completely separate himself from who he once was, accentuating the already deep resonating feelings of not being valued and looked at in the meer way that one looks at an object. The metamorphosis didn’t have only negative effects though. We see the positive effects on the family as they are now more independent. Gregor’s slow departure forced his family to be able to survive on their own and reinvent their lives and needs together. In the end, you find Gregor finally finds his peace and he drifts off into eternal
