Media’s Effect on Body Image and Eating Disorders Gautama Buddha once said: “To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” It is an inspirational quote that signifies the importance of good health regarding psychological matters. This quote indirectly compares the strength of being mentally conscious and healthy rather than physically slim and attractive. In fact, the way the word ‘fit’ has been portrayed in media has caused many young people and adolescents to view ‘fit’ as a person who is thin, has a thigh gap, a slim waist, etc. Thus, they have associated being healthy with have the ‘right’ body size. Media constantly portrays that the desirable look and the ‘ideal’ body type is being very thin or muscular, creating an overall assumption on adolescents that acceptance is achieved only through meeting a certain stereotype. Self-confidence built in younger generations nowadays, in comparison to generations before them, is exceptionally different in which media plays a major role. Recently, young individuals are interacting more through the computer screen with “likes” and texts. It’s easy to understand how messages that convey self-confidence are harder to come by. The potential effect that media has on these individuals, coupled with their desire to “fit in” and be socially accepted, has countless negative consequences. Studies show that 80% of 13 year old females have been, is on, or wants to be on a diet, 1in 4 college aged women have some form of eating disorder, and currently 10 million females and 1 million males are suffering from an eating disorder. Over 30 million Americans deal with an eating disorder during their lifetime, and children as young as seven have admitted having negative feelings about their weight. Therefore, media’s impact on young teens and adolescents is to an great extent, however, their desire to be socially accepted is built through stereotypes which leads them to suffer from eating …show more content…

In addition to legislation, another form of solution to media’s influence on body image and eating disorders starts with education. Adolescents spend a significant amount of time in school and the rest in the vortex of media via the TV and internet. Parents must have a control over possessions that impact the thinking and behavior of their child since they are responsible for guiding them. For this reason, it is mandatory for the parents to not only control what their children have viewership in but to also educate them through the best media such as health documentaries. It should also become a norm in school to educate children on how they should look and think, and also teach them how the media can negatively influence people. By properly educating children, a fewer number of children will be affected by the media and they will value the words of people who know what is good for
