Maturing Media
The media of today is often seen as childish by critics. It’s not just in America, its western cultures in general. It doesn’t seem to matter what the medium may be someone somewhere finds it childish. The blame isn’t easy to place, if any blame exists. What exactly defines childish and adult, and who defines these terms? Or is it that our media, has begun to mature to the next generation of adults? Cultures all around the world have prefabricated ideas as to what is “adulthood” and what isn’t.
As adults continue to age, the mediums will evolve. Modern adults are more open to the idea of, what would have been considered childish in prior generations, just as the prior generations adults would do the same. As children of the past …show more content…

It states nothing of mental maturity, and every “official” definition is based on physical mediums. Mental Maturity is an entirely different beast. To some extent it is based on a wide variety of factors. One concept is humility. Humility is not the same as a lack of confidence, but rather the recognition that you, as a person, are a small piece in a very large universe. Life’s ups and downs happen to everyone, and you will not care later in life. The time period could be days, months or even years later. Regardless of the length, you will likely not care. This isn’t the same as a life ending illness. It’s the small things that would normally get one bummed out for a bit. Balancing life is another idea of maturity, and probably the most important. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” Stating that critics, who are admiring the idea of being grown up, cannot be considered grown up themselves. It is more childish to call something childish. Every generation of adults put away the childish things, including an irrational fear of being called childish by peers. This generation is no different. Adults, those who are mature, are no longer are ashamed of the hobbies they are interested in, and will openly show it. Children would rather hide these interests in order to please some social order, and avoid becoming “the weird kid.” Those who mature beyond this, become adults, those who fail to do so, remain in a state of childishness.
