Many people know Martin Luther King Jr. as very influential historian due to his involvement during his civil rights movement in the mid 1950’s. At a young age, King was concerned about civil rights as it became a growing issue. As he became older, he became a well known activist for his protest and speeches leading to his many accomplishments throughout his lifetime. Martin Luther King Jr was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia (McGill). He married Coretta Scott King June 18, 1953 and had 4 children (About Dr. King) His first name was originally supposed to be “Michael King Jr” but his father Martin Luther King Sr. changed it (20 Interesting Dr. Martin Luther King Facts). He was very smart, he skipped grades 9 and 11 and graduated In 1948 he ordained as a Baptist minister (Martin Luther King Jr. Fast Facts). He became a pastor of a Church in Montgomery, Alabama named Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in 1954 (Martin Luther King Jr.- Biography). The Southern Christian Leadership Conference which was a african american civil rights organization was founded in 1957 by King (Martin Luther King, Jr. 1929-1968). SCLC was developed to advance the nonviolent way to handle the civil rights (Martin Luther King and The Global Freedom Struggle). He wanted African Americans to be able to have the right to vote so he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration(Martin Luther King Jr.- Biography). King traveled over 6 million miles and spoke over 2500 times throughout 1957 - 1968 (Martin Luther King Jr. - Biography). He ended up writing 5 books and many articles to follow (Martin Luther King Jr. - Biography). Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law (Martin Luther King Jr. Fast Facts) . He was known as Man of the Year in Time Magazine in 1964 (History.com). King always had good intentions of trying to help and make a change. He was 30 years old when he received the Nobel Peace Prize which made him the youngest man to be awarded this important award (Martin Luther King Jr. - Biography). After he was awarded this prize he told everyone he was going to turn over the prize money of $54,123 1929-1968). The gun was found on the sidewalk a couple of blocks away from the hotel he was staying at (McGill). A man of the name James Earl Ray was the suspect of the killing (Martin Luther King Jr. 1929-1968). He was pleaded guilty of the killing yet many people including King’s family believe it was a conspiracy. Ray was sentenced 99 years in prison. King was buried in his hometown Atlanta, Georgia. Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of his time. He saw that segregation was wrong and decided to do something about it. He endured through hard times, all the while working to better the lives of others. With his help many people began to take a stand against the racial inequality and injustice against African Americans. He left a lasting impact and improved the lives of thousands living in America and changed the future for those yet to come.
A search of the area around the boarding house revealed a bundle containing a Remington .30-06 rifle, ammunition, binoculars, and a scope on the sidewalk by the boarding home. During the largest FBI investigation, the rifle was finger printed, eyewitness reports were gathered, and all other evidence gathered led the FBI to a single suspect by the name of James Earl Ray. Ray was a small time criminal and was an escapee from the Missouri State Penitentiary at the time of the assassination (Mary Ferrell, 2017). At the time of his escape, he was serving time in Missouri for robbery. The FBI along with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was able to determine that Ray had obtained a Canadian passport under a false identity of George Raymon Sneyd (Mary Ferrell, 2017). On June 8, 1968, Ray was apprehended at a London airport as he was trying to get to Rhodesia. The United States then extradited Ray back to the United States. Ray went on trial in Memphis, and based off of his attorney’s advice, he plead guilty to shooting and killing King in order to avoid the death penalty. Martin’s life story is a very astonishing thing alone. He did remarkable things with his childhood, all the jobs he participated in, his shocking assassination, and just little facts about him. One may think that a person can’t be successful till they are an adult, but King proved this to be false. Martin Luther King’s accomplishments began very early in his life, even as early as his childhood. Starting at a young age, Martin excelled above average in just about all the school work he participated in. He attended Booker T Washington high school and graduated at age fifteen. Skipping two grades in high school, King exceeded all previous standards. He was enrolled at Morehouse College directly after graduating high school. The next step he took was entering Crozer Theological Seminary. For graduate studies, King submitted to Boston University and received his Doctorate of Philosophy in Systematic Theology.

In May, 1936 he was baptized, but the event made little impression on him. In May, 1941, Dr.King was 12 years old when his grandmother Jennie, died of a heart attack. Dr.King (young) jumped from a second story window at the family home, attempting suicide. Dr. King took over the small struggling Ebenezer Baptist church with around 13 members and made it into a forceful congregation. Convicted for armed robbery in 1960, James Earl Ray escaped from Missouri State Penitentiary on April 22, 1967. Ray’s hatred for the black population and support for Nazism fueled his drive to assassinate pacifistic leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. During the civil rights era, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s strong political and religious presence caused him to be a potential target as many denounced his promotion of equality amongst blacks and whites in America. Moreover, with the use of a Remington rifle, Ray shot King from a bathroom window of a hotel located across the street from the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where he had a perfect view of King standing on the motel room balcony. On the eve of April 4, 1968, King was pronounced dead. Afterwards, Ray fled to Canada where he changed his identify and created a fake passport which would later be used to flee to Brussels, Belgium from a Scottish airport. However, Ray was caught at Heathrow Airport on June 8, 1968 and was deported back to America. James Earl Ray was convicted in March 1969 for the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. In court, Ray voluntarily pleaded guilty before Judge W. Preston Battle which reduced his sentence to 99 years in prison instead of the death penalty . As will become evident, the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. resulted in the immediate outburst of riots, Robert Kennedy eulogizing King, the high attendance of King’s funeral service, and the implementation of the Fair Housing Act; the prosecution of James Earl Ray; and in the longer term, the creation of Martin Luther King National Holiday as well as the desire to reopen the case of James Earl Ray in 1997.
