Throughout history we as a society grow and change, who we are and what we stand for. We look at those who have come before us, and try to make improvements to better fit our current lives. Looking at our countries history from the 1950’s forward, one can see the roles and purpose marriage have changed. Some would even dare to say marriage is outdated and a thing of the past. Many factors have changed how our society acts or thinks about a certain subjects, one being marriage. The government passes laws and legislation to move the country in one path or another. When the government passes these laws, it then makes each person reevaluate where he or she stands. Those of what was once the only and socially excepted role and purpose of marriage to what is now accepted? Gone are the days when most streets in America were like those portrayed in the once popular TV show, Leave it Beaver of the 1950’s. In those times, most homes had a mother who would stay at home and a father who would go off to work. The children would come home each day afterschool to a snack and their mother’s smiling face. Now in the twenty-first century, many children are going to afterschool care due to either both parents working or living in single parent homes. The question is not if marriage is outdated or altogether obsolete; it is how far has the idea of marriage changed and shifted to fit the society and times we are currently living in? Some would say marriage is an old-fashioned idea and should be done away with to make room for new and more current ideas.
