We all miss the old days, and this fact has no exceptions. This longing is the reason we throw 90’s parties. I for one wonder what happened to the music in last 20 years that brought us from perfect music like REM and Pearl Jam to some awkward noise like Justin Bieber. In fact, such confusion and admiration for the past that people experience these days resemble the feelings of the people and the artists in the 18th century, including artists like Jean-Marc Nattier who painted Terpsichore, the Muse of Music and Dance (1739), and Sir Joshua Reynolds who painted Lady Sarah Bunbury Sacrificing to the Graces (1765).
Comparing these two paintings mentioned, one would first notice that the paintings belong to different art periods, namely Rococo and Neoclassicism. Labeling and categorizing things usually end up being disadvantageous, and considering these two paintings independent from each other would be a severe misconception caused by labeling. “Neoclassicism” is the term that describes works of art that draws inspiration from the classical art: Ancient Greek and Roman art , yet by comparing these paintings, it will become clear that neoclassical paintings’ distinctive quality is not being influenced by classical art, but having a moral message. The term of “Neoclassicism” was not the best choice for describing this genre of paintings. We will also see the roots of nostalgic paintings, romantic art and neoclassical art in Rococo period.
Jean-Marc Nattier (March 17, 1685 – November 7, 1766) was a French painter born in Paris. He received his first instructions from his father who was a portrait painter, and from his uncle who was a history painter. Nattier aspired to be a history painter; however, his career in history paintings h...

...r reference to classical art; however, examples show that this is not the case. What separates so-called neoclassical art from other types of art is its focus in morality. “Virtus” is Latin for virtue and moral excellence , and the word itself summarizes the neoclassical art: moral excellence portrayed through classical elements. In that sense, we should call Neoclassical period as the “Virtus” era, because many other (hipster) artists loved classical art, before it was cool.

I chose to analyze the The Family, 1941 portray and The Family, 1975 portray, both from Romare Bearden, for this essay because they are very similar paintings but at the same time very different. To write a critical analyzes it was necessary to choose two different paintings that had similar characteristics. The text about critical comparison said that to compare things they have to be similar, yet different, and that’s what these paintings look to me. As I had already written an analysis of The Family, 1941 portray I chose to analyze and compare The Family, 1975 this time. Both works have a lot of color in it and through the people’s faces in the pictures we can feel the different emotions that the paintings are conveying.
By paying attention to elements such as subject matter, light, form, and placement of figures, we can see how these enhance the ideals depicted by each form of art. As a result, we can understand how Neo-Classical art is an attempt to counter the values of Rococo. Rococo is a form of art directly targeted to the privileged. Because not everyone in society belongs to the aristocracy, the Neo-Classicist wanted to impose order as an alternative to the frivolous life style. As a result, we have to works of art that challenge each other’s ideals. The theme of infidelity versus loyalty and how one arrives at the decision made is animated in the works of Fragonard and David. However, it is important to note that there is no right or wrong form of art, although it may seem that this was the common perception of the time. In conclusion, both works of are similar in one important aspect; they are both works of art.
Neoclassicism was Western movements in the decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture that draw inspiration from the "classical" art and culture of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. David learned from Francois Boucher who was a Rococo painter. Rococo style is a style of architecture and decoration, originating in France during about 1720, that evolved from Baroque types and distinguished by its elegant refinement in using different materials for a delicate overall effect and by its ornament of shellwork, foliage, and more. After David studied with Boucher, he was sent to Joseph-Marie Vien who embraced the classical side to the Rococo style instead of overpowering David's tutelage. David wanted to revolutionize the art world with the "eternal" concepts of classicism, after he studied in Italy. Classicism is the principles or styles characteristic of the literature and art of ancient Greece and Rome. Much of David's early work was later on incorporated into his Neoclassical pieces. Neoclassicism flourished throughout France during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth
During my second time visiting the museum, I looked at paintings from the 15th and 19th centuries. Two of the art works that I choose is “The Story of Joseph” from the Renaissance period and “The Marketplace” from the modern art period. Both of these paintings were from different time periods but they were also very similar in content and style.
Western Music has developed in many ways since the middle ages through its form, sound, and message. Throughout these different periods in western music one thing has remained constant, the true essence of music, a way to communicate with someone on a much more divine level than be by rudimentary conversation. Though Ludwig Van Beethoven and Paul McCartney may seem completely opposite they have one in common through their music they changed the world’s perception of its self
The exhibition, Same but Different: Not Seen from the Naked eye, investigates the deeper meanings between similar art pieces. Some older masterpieces from Barnett Newman and Mondrian are also present within the enclosed venue. However, the selected pieces from the old Modern Artists are in relevance to the Co...
As the seventeenth century began the Catholic Church was having a hard time bringing back the people who were swept away by the protestant reformation. The conflict between the protestant had a big influence on art. (Baroque Art) The church decided to appeal to the human emotion and feeling. They did so by introducing a style called Baroque. Baroque was first developed in Rome and it was dedicated to furthering the aims of Counter Reformation. Baroque was first used in Italy than later spread to the north. In this paper I will argue that the Italian Baroque pieces were more detailed and captured the personality of the figure, in contrast and comparison to Northern Baroque pieces that aimed to produce a sense of excitement and to move viewers in an emotional sense leaving them in awe. I will prove this by talking about the different artwork and pieces of Italian Baroque art versus Northern Baroque Art.
...laced on the style and materials presented in the painting. While evaluating and comparing various paintings the author feels that at the beginning of the Renaissance era the skill level of the artist was often not acknowledged whereas materials were, but at the end of the era, skill level played a larger factor in who was chosen to complete the artwork. Therefore, fresco painting, which emerged near the end of the period, changed this so called “deposit”, along with the relationship of the artist and the patron, allowing for the talent and skill of the artist to shine.
Moreover, aristocrats are depicted to have changed as this painting represents radical political reforms (Neo-Classicism, n.p). With this in mind, a close analysis of the picture shows the use of the neo-classicism style. Neo-classicism style represents the similarities in the classical world that contain political themes in this case the radical reforms (Marshrabiyya, n.p).
...merica history. This era has nothing to do with romance but with a strong person believing in the rights of others and expressing deep intense and often uplifting expressions through art. The artwork of the romanticism era was dramatic and would carry the viewer away. The artwork depicted what the artist was feeling not what was being asked of the artist to paint. The artwork was based on the pure emotions of the artist. Romanticism wanted to break away from the neoclassical era and the set of stereotyped rules that came along with that era. “Feelings, passion, imagination, creativity, originality and imperfection prevailed over the importance of order, rules, rationality and perfection from Neoclassicism”. During the romanticism era many things were portrayed: the promotion of individual liberty, ending slavery, and supporting democratic and independence movement.
Additionally, the styles changed; from Rococo, which was meant to represent the aristocratic power and the “style that (…) and ignored the lower classes” (Cullen), to Neoclassicism, which had a special emphasis on the Roman civilization’s virtues, and also to Romanticism, which performs a celebration of the individual and of freedom. Obviously, also the subject matter that inspired the paintings has changed as wel...
Baroque refers to an irregularly shaped complex pearl. Baroque period was characterized by creative style, which embraced architectural designs, paintings as well as sculpture. The period is dated back from around 1600 in Rome from where it spread to most of Europe in the early 17th to mid 18th century. Additionally, this artistic period involved discovery of new ideas that reflected the desire of the Catholic Church in Rome to reassert itself in the wake of Protestant Reformation. Classicism can be defined as a stylistic art in literature, music and visual art that takes the art of perfection of the ancient Greece and Rome from the middle Ages of the 18th century and seeks to be recognized
Art transcends language, and provides a depiction of cultural ideologies, fashion, and ideals in a way texts from the time period can not. Rococo, Neoclassicism, and Romanticism were all indicators of a changing time in which economics, politics, and culture were altered. The transition between each gauges the severity of the change depending on how extremely each differs from its predecessor. While the most extreme occurred between the Rococo movement and the Neoclassical, the transition between the Neoclassicism and Romanticism signified a less severe but still influential change in society. A document from a citizen criticizing art during the time of both the Romantic movement and Neoclassical movement would aid in describing public opinion of the two, and the change in popularity dependent on the classes or perception of the time period. Another document from a commoner on nationalism may have also expanded the perspective of how nationalism was prominent during the time, and how this was reflected in art. All of the movements continue to influence modern art. Rococo inspires artists in depicting the wealth gap, Neoclassicism continues to be used in architecture especially relating to government buildings, and principles of Romanticism are still used in idealized landscape paintings or other imaginative
Roman art is based off of a stylistic cycle with a realistic base. Roman art has different stages which some call classicizing because it emphasizes different aspects of presentations. The word classicizing is mainly use to recognize that Roman art is based off of the Greek art style. For example both art periods have smooth lines, naturalistic forms and a lot of nude bodies. Romans seem to really care about services to their government and hard work. Because of this many citizens reflected these ideas in their artwork by making them based off of real life events and people. Most artwork would display hard work and wisdom. Roman portraits
Music has been many different things to people, an escape, a revolution, an experience, a feeling, a message, a memory, a single moment, peace, class, etc. Music has played a large role in the lives of many. The story of music and it’s evolution is beautiful, from ancient melodies being plucked on a harp, to the british invasion and the popular revolution. Music has changed, and it has effected so much. In the recent decades popular music has manipulated humanity into acting inappropriately.
