In Macbeth by Shakespeare, a war hero named Macbeth is convinced by his wife to kill the king, Duncan. His wife, Lady Macbeth , who is the most manipulative person in Macbeth, continuously manipulates Macbeth and others to achieve her goal of becoming a powerful queen. Lady Macbeth is a very intelligent woman who uses her knowledge of her husband to control him. Lady Macbeth uses her manipulative skills to keep conflict under control, uses her sex appeal to her advantage, and utilizes Macbeth’s inner weaknesses to twist his mind. Lady Macbeth uses her sex appeal to manipulate others in a subtle way. The first example of her seduction comes when Duncan is dining at Macbeth’s home. Lady Macbeth knows what her husband has pride in, which is his manhood. Macbeth’s pride is shown throughout the entire play and she knows that questioning it will persuade him to kill Duncan. Macbeth has second thoughts abut killing Duncan and she must do something to push him back to murder. “Was the hope drunk Wherein you dress 'd yourself? Hath it slept since? And wakes it now, to look so green and pale At what it did so freely? From this time Such I account thy love. Art thou afeard……(Act 1, Scene 7, 39.49- 53.68). Knowing her husband, Lady Macbeth questions her husbands manhood, knowing that he will commit the murder to prove he is a man. This explicitly shows Lady Macbeth’s intelligence and deceitfulness. Lady Macbeth also knows how to use manipulation to avoid conflict. At the banquet, Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost, and the guests are very suspicious of what is happening. Lady Macbeth realizes that this could go wrong very fast and quickly convinces the guests that nothing is wrong. When Macbeth claims that the ghost has come back, Lady Macbeth knows she must send everyone home and make an excuse for her husband’s actions without raising any suspicion. She controls others “behind the scenes” without anyone ever suspecting that she is controlling. With Macbeth, she continuously controls him subtly to get what she wants. Lady Macbeth’s goal is to become queen and have immense power. To do that, she must put ambition into Macbeth, especially when he has second thoughts about committing murder. In Act 1, Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that if she made a promise to kill her baby, she would do it. “I have given suck, and know How tender tis’ to love the babe that milks me. I would, while it was smiling in my face…..” (Act 1, Scene 7, 62.67). By Lady Macbeth saying this, she is effectively convincing Macbeth that he is disappointing her and breaking his promise to her. This shows her ability to develop complete control over Macbeth at any time. When Macduff goes to wake Duncan, he finds him dead. Macbeth reveals that he killed the servants, and suspicion rises. Lady Macbeth calls for help realizing that Macbeth will say something that will jeopardize them. By her calling for help, she is controlling the situation by taking out any suspicion of her involvement in the crime, as well as Macbeth’s. “What’s the business, that such a hideous trumpet calls to parley the sleepers of the house?
