The Power of Yet
How do we define the power of yet and why is it significant? “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” (Lao Tzu). Even though there are many steps ahead of us, if we choose to begin with a single step, then everything will be possible. In the article of “The power of yet” and “Asking Students Harder Questions”, Professor Dweck inspired others with her speech of the “power of yet”. She told her audience that the word “yet” and “not yet” is different, but are in the same format because one is when they are making progress and the other is when they are almost there. It is important because a lot of people don’t care about their learning process and it made their lives miserable. Many of us have a dream job when we were little, such as becoming a dentist, pilot, astronaut, animal rescuer, and many more. Could those dreams really come true? It sure can because if one start from the beginning, then they will accomplish toward the end. Everything can be possible, only if one believe in it. How will

Haven’t they thought that if they use their knowledge to help someone that need help, they might be the one that is able to change someone’s life. There are many people out there who can’t even go to school because they have no money. They are lucky to have the opportunity to sit in a class and listen to their teacher’s lecture. They are wasting their parent’s money because they are wasting the time socializing instead of using their valuable time. In the future if they didn’t have a well-paying job, maybe one day they will regret their choices and question themselves, who they are and why they even exist today. People can use their love and strength to help the people around
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” (BAM, 2010, p.20) These words were first written down over 2,400 years ago by a Chinese general named Sun Tzu in his famous military strategy treatise known today as The Art of War. These words, in fact the entire book, are just as valid today as they were during Sun Tzu’s lifetime. He was one of the first truly visionary and ethical military leaders in the world. Despite the fact that there is not much known about Sun Tzu today other than his writings, in this essay, I intend to extract his essence from his treatise to prove he was a visionary leader. I will then continue to prove he was also an ethical leader. Finally, I will finish by detailing how his seminal work has inspired me to self-reflect on how I can be a better visionary and ethical leader in the 21st Century Air Force. So, what exactly is a ‘visionary’ leader?
The Art of War is a treatise written in Ancient China that discusses the most and least effective military strategies for successful warfare according to Sun Tzu, a military general whose existence is still debated to this day. While not every military commander in the history of warfare has read it, the strategies provided can be used as a way to assess said commanders and the effectiveness of their campaigns. In Sun Tzu 's own words, “The general that hearkens to my counsel and acts upon it, will conquer: let such a one be retained in command! The general that hearkens not to my counsel nor acts upon it, will suffer defeat:--let such a one be dismissed!”1 This paper will discuss various iconic battles throughout history and how closely the leading commanders of each army followed the advice of Sun Tzu. Despite the fact that Sun Tzu lived hundreds of years before many of these battles took place, the

There are numerous of things that are impossible to believe about people who are in poverty or homeless. Almost a quarter of all individuals do not have electricity. Not many people imagine living on less than ten dollars a day, but eighty percent of people actually does. (Eleven facts about global). Think that is bad? Actually, “one half of the worlds population—more than three billion people — live on less than 2 dollars and fifty cents a day. More than one billion and three hundred million live in extreme poverty— less than a dollar and twenty five cents a day” (Eleven facts about global). A lot of people in the world complain about how much they make but actually they should be proud because over half of the world live off a few dollars
There are other people out there like me, people who don’t want to see others suffering when it is not at all necessary. Like the other passengers on the plane with extra bags for the needy or the random person that I passed on the street who gave there leftovers to the homeless women who hadn’t eaten in days. Maybe even the man who brought ten young boys into the restaurant I was eating for a warm meal simply because he could and he wanted to. That trip taught me that my goal of eliminating poverty is a tough one, a problem that I may not see the end of in my lifetime, but an undeniably feasible
The idea of materialism is not present in many of the verses written by Lao-tzu.
...are extraordinarily wealthy. Even though the wealthy are trying to do good by donating money, in reality, the wealthy are simply giving away their money to people who do not necessarily need it, according to Thoreau.
All they can practically do is nothing and hope everything will be ok; but perhaps family and friends will help out; but this is not always certain. In addition, we deserve to treat ourselves. At the end of the day we are human, and we deserve to feel happiness. We need money for basic necessities and at the same time as reward for ourselves. If we don’t have money to treat ourselves for example a movie or a fancy dinner; there is no point in living life. If one’s life just revolves around working all day to put food on the table and paying one’s bills and in addition, donating the rest; one is not living life. Not living a fully human, fully alive life at the very least. One is basically living life for someone else’s existence, but your own. The splendid thing is, that one can have both; a life of glee and also giving. This is what one would call balance. So yes, one can go to work and pay bills, place food on the table, go out a movie once a week and a fancy dinner; but also donate twenty dollars to the poor once a month. Or instead, one only watches a movie once a week and donates that x amount of money from what would be of the fancy dinner to the needy; and the list continues on about what one can do to aid the

The motto “Educating men and women for others” seems guileless enough, it simply means that education is not just for the self, but for the improvement of society and the improvement of the future due to the actions we take because of our education. And when Fr. Pedro Arrupe states that “our prime educational objective must be to form men and women for others, who believe that a love of self or of God which does not issue forth in justice for the least of their neighbors is a farce,” he is entirely true. Those that say they love themselves or love God, but do not act on what they say by serving others are imposters because if one loves himself or herself or God, then he or she understands that he or she is not alone in this world. Due to this knowledge, they are compelled to help others so that they too can achieve love of themselves or of God. This however is quite easy to say, but very difficult to act on, and due to this, anyone that acts on the insights of Fr. Pedro Arrupe, is a good role model.
