For my Birth Story Interview, I chose to interview Jane. Jane is 35 year old Filipino American woman, who is a married mother of one. She loves to travel to Lake Tahoe, cook big dinners, and spend time with her family. I met Jane at a hospital that I visit regularly; she is a nurse. I chose to interview Jane because she always shares fun stories about her daughter, and I thought she would be an enthusiastic interviewee. I also thought it would be an excellent opportunity to get to know her better, as well as learn more about the labor and delivery of her precious daughter. Jane and I have spoken many times before about her daughter, however, she has never shared her labor and delivery experience with me. Unfortunately, she did not latch on right away. She was born at 1:12 pm, however, she did not nurse until midnight. During this period she was given a couple ounces of formula. Jane explained how she felt when they gave her daughter formula: “I was happy when they gave her a little formula, because it was a long day for her. I went into labor at 7am, after she endured a lot of stress, I delivered her at 1:12pm, and she had not eaten all day long.” The birth of her baby had taken its toll on both mother and baby . Meredith Small discusses the fatigue and trauma that mothers and babies experience during childbirth in chapter one of her book, Our Babies, Ourselves (13). Jane was relived that her daughter would finally be able to eat. Jane admits that this was not the ideal scenario, however, she wanted to do what was best for her baby at that moment.
