Exploring Bias Against the Correctional System

In today’s society, we often find people who have a bias against the correctional system. We find these people to have no credible source besides the information the media proposes, third party information, or if they themselves have been locked up. Whether we sit and listen to them preach about the corruptness is up to us. When we talk about the correctional system we are talking about it as a whole. This includes jails, prisons, the inmates, and employees. Whether we agree or disagree with our own personal thoughts most of us haven’t seen it at first hand like the interviewee I had interviewed. My interviewee, was the Lieutenant for the Jefferson Country detention center. Now this is different than a prison, in the sense of length of stay, but the similarities are endless. According to the textbook Corrections an Introduction “one way in which jails and prisons are extremely similar is the importance of professional staff.” (Seiter, 2005) During my interview, I had asked a basic question that asked what your perspective on the jail is. The response I had received seemed deeply thought full and he responded with
“I think the jails are a good thing, detentions deals with county and city …show more content…

No matter what part you focused on they all come together to create a whole system. I really enjoyed talking with my interviewee, because it gave me a different perspective on what things are like at first hand inside my community. At times, the textbook is a great source of knowledge but I feel this I have a better understanding of a jail system thank to my interviewee. The last thing that I would like to add is that I feel his knowledge is more credible than the stories shared throughout the textbook because in life we constantly go through different issues, and I found his answers to be more “newer” than what the textbook would
