The essay will set out to answer why it is crucial for an organisation to be able to motivate its employees. This will be done by looking at different methods used by businesses and academics to show the importance of employee motivation to employers.
To answer this question regarding employee motivation importance we must be able to try and define what motivation is and how it affects employees resulting in its importance within the workplace and to employers.
Also looking at theories made by academic researchers which can be used by employers to motivate employees. This includes two types of motivational theories. Firstly a content theory where the emphasis is placed on what motivates employees is called ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ by Maslow (1943). Secondly a Process theory that show how to motivate employees by Adams (1963) called ‘Equity Theory’. Then using examples of motivation affecting the retail sector.
Motivation is a very complex thing it can be hard to describe as there is no clear definition only different peoples interpretation of what it means. Steers & Porter (1979) define it as “Motivation is that which energises, directs and sustains behaviour”, while Robbins (1993) cited in Ramahall (2004) defines motivation as “the willingness to exert high levels of effort toward organizational goals, conditioned by the effort’s ability to satisfy some individual need.”
Both definitions give an insight into what motivation is but Robbins (1993) view can be argued to have a much deeper understanding into answering the question in hand as it links the idea that motivation is what drives an individual into achieving a goal, in the previous quote by Robbins (1993) links motivation to an organisational goal and how motivation drives ...

Affecting the employee’s quality and effort that is put into their job. Employers who understand its importance will benefit. Employee motivation is also very important in a rapidly changing competitive business environment as it promotes the employee to work harder and become more versatile and innovative in their work allowing them to work to the best of their abilities as they are driven to succeed. From the employee engagement statistics shows that those who are more involved with the organisation and its goals are more likely to stay within the business leading to more committed and loyal staff being driven to achieve success for themselves and the organisation.
