The Impact of Transformational Leadership on Job Stress

1196 Words3 Pages

I. Statement of the problem.

The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of transformational-leadership (TL) on job stress (JS) and the impact of JS on burnout. Most of the research shows the attention to the health care workers in terms of JS. Amarjit S. Gill, Alan B. Flaschner & Mickey Shachar are focused on the hospitality industry, to be precise, on the relationship between type of leadership, JS and burnout for customer-contact service employees (CCSEs) in hotels and restaurants.

To perform the research authors distinguish JS and its degree, burnout and its degree in the relationship to the type of leadership used by management. In order to be consistent with previous research authors took all the measurements on TL, JS and burnout from Dubinsky et al. research and conducted a pilot study with CCSEs at two organizations (a hotel and a restaurant). As the result one hundred and forty seven useable questionnaires were received (31 percent from hotels, 60 percent from restaurants and 9 percent from pubs).

The research was based on several hypotheses:

1. The more a manager’s leadership is perceived as transformational, the less will be JS of his or her CCSEs.

2. The likelihood of the occurrence and degree of CCSE burnout is positively related to the degree of perceived JS.

II. Literature

In the introduction authors are presenting occupational health issues and are highlighting JS and burnout as direct cause of health issues. Authors state that identified problems of JS and burnout are fundamental, because it can help us to prevent and reduce stress as well as its outcomes.

Further we can see TL concept and its definition presented by authors. They pointing out the difference between transactional and TL styles in...

Since TL is associated with lower stress and burnout, authors highly recommend implementing of TL as managerial method of choice. It is so obvious that TL style of leadership obtains benefits for the business.

As a recommendation from the authors states, there are so many other variables that should be researched (e.g.: the degree to which management understands the desire of the employees to be empowered) in the future to be able to cover all the aspects of relationship between CCSEs and managers in hospitality business.
