Raising a child can be an overwhelming situation for any working mother and father, but it is an even more daunting task when there is only one parents to take on this mission. I commend all parents who juggle and multi-task their lives to provide a balance and nurturing life for their children, but I must still remain objective. I can say that I speak with knowledge, having female friends and female family members who are single-handedly taking on this challenge. Being a parent has made me realize that there is no one plan that works for all, but certainly there is one desired result; children who become caring, independent and productive members of society. For many years, children growing up in a single parent family have been viewed as different. Being raised by only one parent seems impossible to many yet over the decades it has become more prevalent. In today’s society many children have grown up to become emotionally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to show them the rocky path that life bestows upon all human beings. The problem lies in the difference of children raised by single parents versus children raised by both a mother and a father. Does a child need both parents? Does a young boy need a father figure around? Does the government provide help for single parents? What role do step-parents and step-siblings play? There was no precedent for a spike this high, Pews Research Center revealed that one in four kids are destined to an unmarried mother; yet almost all of these mothers aren’t even the age of majority. Due to this hardship, they must improvise when it comes to adjusting to the change of now raising a child and their parenting skills. They must manage their personal goals while trying to provide a stable structure for their child. Many times they fall short due to their lack of resources and stress. Regardless of their romantic relationship status, it often falls on the mother to raise the child. However, married individuals are forced to battle with elements like faithfulness and life-long commitment to one individual, which may be boring in some cases. With higher percentages of marriage ending in divorce, and higher rates of childbearing out of wedlock, single parent families are increasing rapidly. “Seventy percent of all the children will spend all or part of their lives in a single-parent household.” (Dowd) Studies have shown that the children of these families are affected dramatically, both negatively and positively. Women head the majority of single- parent families and as a result, children experience many social problems from growing up without a father. Some of these problems include lack of financial support, and various emotional problems by not having a father around, which may contribute to problems later in life. At the same time, children of single-parent homes become more independent because they learn to take care of themselves, and rely on others to do things for them.
Almost 50% of our children in the United States of America would live in a home with either parent sometime in their lives. Single parents carry out the work of parenting their children with the understanding that most responsibilities falls on them and it is more than they can handle (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2012). However, it is not easy for the children as well as the parent, for instance, communication is usually a huge issue. There are numerous communication issues that single parents are facing today. That is, parents should talk to their children early, they should be encouraging, supportive and positive.

One of the hardest issues to survive in, as a single parent, is an overwhelming emotion that you should complete the role of both mother and father. This feeling evolves and will be more intense if the other single parent is not portraying a role that is active with the children.
Some parents believe that while they had a partner who equally contributed in the making of a life that was brought into the world, they should be held accountable and be responsible for the child as well. Whether or not the parents of the child are married, it is possible for both parents to remain active participants in the child’s life and still share the responsibility of raising them. When you are a single, adult person, you have one main responsibility, and that is the responsibility to care for yourself. That’s it, just you! However, when you and your partner or significant other agrees to have children, you must understand that the duty of raising healthy, responsible individuals starts with understanding the role as parents.
