How does an extra sixty dollars in your pocket a month sound? Sounds good right? It sounds pretty good to me. That’s potentially how much money you could save on health insurance just for being a non-smoker, having a healthy weight and having good cholesterol and blood pressure levels. As we all know healthcare costs in this country are extremely high. And to make things worse, the fact that we are spending tons of money on it doesn’t make us any healthier. According to the research done by The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice, there is no association between higher spending on healthcare and better outcomes overall when looking at patients with conditions such as hip fractures and heart attacks. Both of which greatly affect our older population, and 78% of our spending on Medicare alone is spent on people 65 years and older. ( ) So you can only imagine how much money is being wasted on healthcare. Now back to that extra sixty dollars a month. There are still skeptics on whether Burd’s claims are true. David S. Hilzenrath writes in the Washington Post a “review of Safeway documents and interviews with company officials show that the company did not keep health-care costs flat for four years.” Although that is true , he’s not taking into account that those number are for the entire company including union and non-union workers. Unfortunately Safeway’s “Health Measures” incentive program is only available to non-union workers which make up 28,000 of their 200,000 workforce. That’s only 14%. This explains why the numbers are off. So even though skeptics have a legitimate reason to doubt the success of the program based on those numbers, they have to look at all the facts before throwing this genius solution to cutting health care costs in our
