How do you take the perfect landscape photo?
The area of creative arts practice that I’m going to investigate is landscape photography and how to take the perfect landscape photo. I chose this specific area to focus on because I have always been interested in nature photography and I’ve always wanted to know how to take a brilliant landscape photo, I love that one photo can bring such amazing stories and emotions. Landscape photography focuses on a section of scenery from the natural world (or sometimes man-made) seen through a single viewpoint. It shows places within the world and makes a connection with the viewer. Different scapes such as cityscapes, seascapes, landscapes of rural areas, roads and gardens all fall into the same category. During this investigation I hope to discover the correct techniques, methods and technologies to use to uncover the secrets of taking the perfect landscape image. I chose two well known practitioners; Paul Arnold and Ansel Adams to help seek information from and to validate that what I’m stating is correct.

Most of the websites are up to date and reliable but I struggled finding information on the Australian artist, Paul Arnold, but fortunately I got just enough to complete this investigation. I have learnt a great deal on the history of landscape photography and how to actually take the perfect landscape photo. I never realised how many different methods and technology there was to help capture the perfect image. Although he constantly fought for the preservation of nature, he treated people who disagreed with him with “respect and courtesy” (Turnage). He was a man that fought for what he believed in and made a huge difference in the photography field by playing a role in establishing the first photography department in a museum, more specifically the Museum of Modern Art in New York (Turnage). Ansel Adams has changed the vision of landscape photography and will always be known and admired for the work he did.

Giorgione "loved to paint landscapes." Especially in "The Adoration of the shepherds" you can see how much effort he invested in painting a detailed background in form of a piece of coast and part of a village. When isolated this part takes on a life of its own (If concentrating you can see tiny details such as two persons standing at the edge of the coast.

John Fielder is a nationally famous photographer. For the last 40 years his photos are taken of Colorado while he is hiking and skiing. When he first visited Colorado at the age of 14 he said he felt like something or someone guided him their and he belonged in Colorado for the rest of his life. He is well known for creating his best selling books ever; Colorado 1870-2000. His latest work is the work of great outdoors Colorado for its 20th anniversary. When he was 23 he decided to start doing photography. He was amazed by other famous photographers work and tried to take photos just like them, but it didn’t really turn out how he wanted. Nevertheless he did not give up. On his days off he would go on hikes and he would take photos. He practiced for 8 years and decided to quit his job and just focus on photography. He loves nature so therefore he loves to take photos or nature. He has published 33 books in the past 30 years. He uses photography with a large format 4 x 5 film camera, he also carries 7 lenses and 30 sheet film holders and about 400 sheets of color film. In the winter he usually country skies around the mountains of Colorado. He skies 5 to 9 miles a day to get to hut to hut. In the summer he goes on river trips and usually river rafts. Sometimes he rafts on class 5 rapids. He has two daughters who love to go on trips with him although they do not take photos themselves.
Landscape painting was extremely important during the middle of the nineteenth century. One of the leading practitioners of landscape painters in America was Thomas Cole. He visited many places seeking the “natural” world to which he might utilize his direct observations to convey the untainted nature by man to his audience. His works resolved to find goodness in American land and to help Americans take pride in their unique geological features created by God. Thomas Cole inspired many with his brilliant works by offering satisfaction to those seeking the “truth” (realism) through the works of others.
Art serves the purpose of transmitting ideas about our lives and environment - forcing people to think about different aspects of our lives. Artist Andy Goldsworthy has a very specific style, creating mostly temporary art using nature as both his materials and his setting. His works range from gold leaf covered rocks to a photo of him throwing a string of kelp into the sky for it to contort into some seemingly random shape. This paper, however, will discuss Goldsworthy 's work “Sycamore Leaves Edging the Roots of a Sycamore Tree” which shows the base of a tree lined with a yellow gradient fading into the ground made from the leaves of the very tree it surrounds. As you can see, there is a big world waiting for you to capture and mold its image. Whether you just want to remember that sunset on your honeymoon, your little one’s first steps or even if you click your shutter at everything you pass… the right equipment certainly helps. Whatever equipment you use, with good lighting and attention to such details as film type and speed, distance from subject, rule of thirds, and an eye for what you want, you can make beautiful photos that you and yours will cherish for generations to come.
When going for a walk, a person takes in the beauty around them. On this particular day, the refulgent sun is extra bright, making the sky a perfect blue. White, puffy clouds fill the sky, slowing moving at their own pace. The wind is peacefully calm, making the trees stand tall and proud. There is no humidity in the air. As this person walks down the road, they see a deer with her two fawns. The moment is absolutely beautiful. Moments like this happen only once in a great while, making us wanting to stay in the particular moment forever. Unfortunately, time moves on, but only if there were some way to capture the day’s magnificence. Thanks to Joseph Niépce, we can now capture these moments and others that take our breath away. The invention of the camera and its many makeovers has changed the art of photography.

According to opponents, an art work should be open for every class of society. As viewing a large land art piece from the air is beyond the reach of poor person. But photographs are the best option to represent the huge and unreachable land artworks.

The world we live in today is always changing, whether it be technology or the land. As these changes take place, society must adapt to them. Many things begin to change as a result of this and society beings to turn into something completely different. One of the most overlooked changes that takes place is that of the environment and landscape. The landscape is one of the most important parts of our society’s culture and has a great effect on how we live. It seems that nowadays, many individuals are taking advantage of the land and nothing appreciating it for every thing that it is worth. Its true that not everyone is going to look at the environment and landscape in the same way, however that is no excuse to disrespect it. Then again, a whole new argument can start from that, as different individuals are going to have different views on what disrespecting the land. Many positive things have come from taking advantage of the land, and also, there have been many negative things to come as a result of this. It all depends on how you look at it. One thing is for sure though, no matter what the case is, the land and environment we live in plays a huge part in each of our everyday lives.
