We have all seen them. Men, women and sometimes even children begging for spare change to pay for their next meal. Some people may take pity upon a homeless person and give them money, food, or maybe just a glance that may or may not be so kind. Although we have all probably had an encounter with a person living on the streets, not many people acknowledge the fact that this is a keen issue in the United States of America. There is homelessness all over the world and more remotely, it exists in our very own backyard. At times we fail to acknowledge these human beings because we are too distracted with our own active lives. There are many mixed emotions about this topic and rightly so. Many people wonder how the homeless end up without homes and there is sometimes judgment against the poor. Some people call those without a roof ‘lazy’ for begging in the streets instead of working. The forlorn truth is that if one is homeless, it is very difficult to acquire a job. For one, the applicant in many places must have a valid address and/or telephone number to be able to contact, homeless people do not have that. Even then, the next process would be an interview and there is a bias against people who are not groomed or have a foul smell. The criminalization of the homeless and prejudgment against them must be altered. This world unjust and these people are in the midst of grievance. The illegalization of homelessness will not put an end to this issue. There is no way for a homeless person to stop being homeless simply because it is not legal, it just isn’t possible. Instead of taking more from the homeless, we as citizens should give to them. There are many things we throw away day after day and there are far too many people who sure could use our ‘trash’. The government must step up in its efforts to help those in need and we must not be so quick to judge a person in poverty because we never know what they have gone through and their current circumstance. The criminalization of the homeless is a real thing and we may not even realize it because we have other issues in our own lives that we go through.
