Antonio Márez, the main character of Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, begins the Departure element of Joseph Campbell’s Hero Cycle when he initiates his journey to adulthood. He questions whether he belongs to his mother’s family, the Lunas, who live as farmers, or his father’s family, the Márezes, who freely wander the land. His care for his family demonstrates his maturity at attempting to always do the best he can for everyone. Although his parents each want him to follow their families’ paths, they remain absent from Antonio’s true journey of understanding his own thoughts and beliefs, leaving him “frightened to be alone” (Anaya 7); the lack of parental support through his personal conflict leads him to have trouble knowing how to address He has an especially hard time with the death of Narciso, as his “rage and protest filled [him]. [He] wanted to cry out into the storm that it was not fair that Narciso die for doing good” (Anaya 178). The unjust deaths push Antonio to search even harder for the answers for his philosophical questions, now that people are in danger. Antonio’s Road of Trials is heroic because it demonstrates how pain and loss threaten to overtake him, but he bravely refuses to back down. Although he is always trying to understand new beliefs, the Goddess, the Virgin Mary, remains in the most special part of Antonio’s heart. She represents Meeting the Goddess, as Antonio is now seeing her through mature eyes: “I fastened my eyes on the statue of the Virgin until I thought that I was looking at a real person, the mother of God, the last relief of all sinners” (Anaya 47). As he begins to discover the meaning in both his old and new beliefs, he begins to accept his spiritual questions. By understanding the fact that they cannot always be simply answered, he enters his Apotheosis and ascends as he achieves wisdom and He questions whether he belongs to his mother’s family, the Lunas, who live as farmers, or his father’s family, the Márezes, who freely wander the land. She chooses him and sends him to save as she helps lead him on his path. Through assisting her, he gains new experiences that contradict his traditional Christian teachings, which encourage him to be open-minded and bold as he challenges everything he believes. Throughout the time I spent between the covers of The Prince of Los Cocuyos, I was astounded by Richard Blanco’s dynamic relationship with the novel’s sole “antagonist”: his abuela. To Antonio, the Golden Carp provides its own brand of wisdom, comfort and moral guidance therefore it served Antonio as another milestone on finding himself. “This is what he had expected God to do at his first holy communion.” (Chapter 11, 114) Once Antonio finds the animal he explains about it. Antonio and the carp seemed to have a connection, but the Golden Carp saw him just as a friend. Antonio starts to visualize the beauty and understanding this Golden Carp was starting to become something meaningful to him at the same time it was bringing him closer to God and himself. Also, just like God the sea creature “vent (the people) a prophecy.” (Chapter 11 , 118) In other words, if the people would somehow have had disobeyed the carp then they would be punished. If the people of the city did not follow the prophecy than they would be swallowed up because of all their sins. Family is one of the most important institutions in society. Family influences different aspects of a person’s life, such as their religion, values, morals and behavior. Unfortunately, problems may arise when an individual’s belief system or behavior does not coincide with that of family standards. Consequently, individuals may be forced to repress their emotions or avoid acting in ways that that are not acceptable to the family. In the novel The Rain God, written by Arturo Islas, we are presented with a story about a matriarchal family that deals with various conflicts. One major internal conflict is repression. Throughout the novel the characters act in strange ways and many of the family members have internal “monsters” that represent the past that they are repressing. In his article, “The Historical Imagination in Arturo Islas’s The Rain God and Migrant Souls”, Antonio C. Marquez’s implicitly asserts a true idea that The Rain God is a story about repression. Marquez’s idea can be supported from an analysis of secondary sources and a reading of the primary text.

The novel takes place in New Mexico where Antonio tries to fulfill his parent’s expectations while struggling with religion. Through Antonio, Anaya defies the some of the principles in religion and expresses her interpretation on the system of beliefs. Antonio’s religious confusion suggests that man should be able to choose his own religion and destiny. In the Bless me, Ultima, Antonio experiences conflict in his religious beliefs because of the deaths he witnesses, the new ideas that he learns, and his open-minded mentality.
In the novel, Bless me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, a boy goes through many more experiences than any child in the hot summer days in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. He witnesses the deaths of his close friends and family. This boy expresses his emotions and grief through his dreams, only to wake up with fear and confusion in his mind. Antonio’s life is filled with dreams that foreshadow future incidents, as well as influences Antonio’s beliefs of religion and ideas of innocence.
Elements of a myth, tale, and epic are intertwined and combine to form the story of “Ibonia”. The main character, Ibonia, has connections to the Gods which is central to a myth, these divine qualities are demonstrated through his marvelous birth and ability to speak while in the womb. The story can also be characterized as a tale, due to Ibonia representing the everyman and everywoman and undergoing change on an individual level as he navigates his rite of passage. As the story progresses, Ibonia also becomes an epic hero, as he travels from the familiar to unfamiliar on his rite of passage journey and ultimately introduces the concept of marriage to the earth. An epic hero is making a move towards humanity and leaving behind his Godly attributes and connections, often dying in the process, as he faces his own limitations and the ever-present death-dealing forces. Antonio from the novel Bless Me, Ultima written by Rudolfo Anaya and Paikea from Whale Riders run through many conflicts trying to seek their destinies. Antonio, must choose to follow her mother’s footsteps of tending the land or become free and wild like his father and older brothers as well as deciding whether or not to follow and walk alongside Ultima, even if she may be evil. Unlike Antonio, Paikea must prove to herself and her grandfather that she is able to lead her tribe out of depression and laziness, even if she may not physically hold the components of becoming a leader. Both Antonio and Paikea are able to find their destinies, but they each have unique and individual experiences of family pressure, spiritual leaders and becoming a leader.
