In Margret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale a woman named Offred shares her experience in the Republic of Gilead as a housemaid. As the story begins, we find that the regime strategically encroaches the rights of women, independence and seizes anything they thought to be pleasurable deeming it contraband. This includes clothing, literature especially old magazines, and cosmetics. Offred, remembers a time when she was married to her husband Luke with a job and having her own financial backing. However one day it all changes when she get fired from her job and when she tries to go to the bank they won’t allow her to get her money out. An example of that is Gilead, in the Republic of Gilead, the name Gilead is in the bible found in the Old Testament, at the time it was flourishing Israelite upper region near the Jordan River that was well known for its abundance of cattle, vineyards, fruitful orchards, and spices. Through it is quite ironic that in the story, they eat sparingly and the women are barren. As Gilead reorganized their city to an Old Testament-inspired society, they referred all authoritative figures with some form of religious term attached to their title. For example The commander of the faithful were the high-ranking officials, the guardians of faith were the police force, the angels were the army, and the eyes were the secret police who watched over the citizens of Gilead. They are the eyes of God watching their every move. Gilead also had a classification for the women, the Wives, Econowives and Unwomen, however, the two who referred to the bible were the Martha’s and the Handmaids. Loaves and Fish, Milk and Honey, and Jezebel’s all were events, which occurred before and after the birth of Christ. Loaves and Fish, which is the story about a boy who was the only one to bring food to one Jesus teachings. Jesus performed a miracle and was able to feed everyone with the five loaves and two fish, this story is found in Matthew 14:17 KJV. Milk and Honey is a phrase found in Exodus during Moses’s vision of the burning bush when the voice of God tells him to go back to Egypt to free the Jews. Jezebel’s is the hotel where the prostitutes, executives, and commanders go to have their way with each other and the last place we hear of Moira, Offred’s best friend. After escaping for the second time and being caught by the Eyes, they gave her the option of the colonies or Jezebel’s, choosing the later she no longer had the spunk about her and lost hope in leaving. She justifies Jezebel’s by saying it is not that bad; however, the Jezebel in the bible who was the wife of Ahab the king of Israel was. Jezebel was a prostitute and murderer 1st Kings and 2nd Kings tells her story, but first Kings 16:31 references her as an evil woman who killed prophets of God while feeding and caring some in her house.
