The impression made by a character in a play is one of its most complex and debatable components, for each individual, from the director to the audience, forms an idea based on their own interpretation of the work. Each character can be read differently, with each perception having its own implications beyond the text. The analysis of alternate perspectives of Hamlet can provide insight into possible hidden motivations and underlying plot elements invisible in the original text. The question of whether Hamlet is truly insane in Hamlet or is in fact using the illusion of insanity to further enhance his plan of revenge on Claudius provides interesting insight into the perspectives on Hamlet and the deeper workings of his character. Hamlet’s indecision when attempting to kill Claudius while he was praying is a prime example of this. This character, unable to act when given the most opportune moment, certainly doesn’t seem able to have any mastery over the situation. This is further demonstrated in his “Get Thee to a Nunnery” speech (3.1.134-154) in which Hamlet draws an erroneous parallel between his mother and Ophelia, lashing out at Ophelia for no apparent reason other than his own inability to deal with the betrayal of his mother. Yet another proponent of this perspective features Hamlet’s most well-known soliloquy, “To Be or Not to Be.” This soliloquy illuminates some of Hamlet’s deeper feelings and adds a striking certainty to his insanity. While the intriguing nuances of Hamlet’s insanity provide an interesting outlook on the play, it cannot be ignored that this has been the preferred representation of Hamlet throughout the years of its production. The ‘mastermind’ theme not only represents a perspective on Hamlet (as a play) not commonly found in many productions, but it also captures a totally different underlying theme of cleverness and engineering which makes little appearance in the more traditional insanity interpretation that focuses on emotional turbulence and internal conflict.The mastermind‘ interpretation also features much more depth than the insanity reading, and is much less apparent in the original text, creating an unclearness of Hamlet’s true intentions that far surpasses the depth of any story elements offered by the opposing
