The beginning of the book The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis was difficult to understand and hard to figure out, but as you read on, you come to find out that this book is about heaven and hell and the people that go there. The narrator who is the main character in the book tells the story on what he sees from his eyes. The author describes hell as a dark cold town with alleys that people live in and no one to be seen on the streets, and heaven as this place that looks beautiful with green grass, mountains, rivers, and animals running around. C.S. Lewis uses different characters throughout the book to help understand the scene and the situations that are going on. The ghosts that go with him to heaven from hell are all different and play a big role in this novel. The other characters in the novel are the spirits who live in heaven and talk to the ghosts. Through the conversations going on between the ghosts and the spirits you learn more and more about what is going on, how characters got there, and their problems. The narrator listens to the two talk and from the conversation does he learn more about himself. I believe Lewis made this book so the reader can put themselves in the narrator's position and also think about their own lives and circumstances.
The ghost at first in the bus and in hell seemed to the narrator that they were a solid, but he soon came to find out that once they reached heaven he could see right through them. He figured it was the new surroundings they were in made them appear translucent. Each ghost has a different problem that either ends up being solved and turns to the mountains, or doesn't listen and turns back to the bus. Most cases in this book the ghost go back to the bus, which will take them back to hell. The ghosts do not like how heaven is and they feel uncomfortable. They feel uncomfortable because the grass is hard and tough on your feet, the river is solid, the flowers and trees are solid like a diamond and can not move, and even the leaves are too heavy to lift. Most of them do not understand why they are there. Heaven is a big change from hell and the ghost don't feel right at the moment so they want to head back where they felt at home and comfortable no matter if it was hell.
This passage describes the power of storytelling to create realities. The father tells his son "tales" about life before the catastrophe which has rendered the earth a wasteland to its survivors. However, to the son, these tales are hard to believe because they are so unlike the current reality. The father, having experienced the pre-apocalyptic world, is thus alien to the son, who knows only life after the disaster.
Ghosts, both figurative and literal, are very common in the Joy Luck Club and are a recurring theme in the book. The mothers of The Joy Luck Club were all raised in traditional Chinese households, which has influenced them to have deeper feelings about ghosts. Mentally, the term ghost is used to describe people who have become a shell of their former selves and rarely speak or do anything. Physically, ghost is used to describe the spirit of the dead. One issue which, like the rest, can be answered in more than one way is why Mrs. Grose believes in the Governess when she tells her about her ghost encounters. Usually one would second-guess such outlandish stories as the ones that the governess shares throughout the story, yet Mrs. Grose is very quick to believe our borderline-insane narrator. One of the explanations for such behavior could be the underlying fact that Mrs. Grose and the governess have a similar socio-economic background, therefore making them somewhat equal even if the governess does not always seem to think that way. This fact makes them susceptible to trusting and believing each other, and to believing that the ghosts are there, for the people that the ghosts are presenting used to be servants and therefore from a similar socio-economic background. To add on to that, Bruce Robbins proposes in his Marxist criticism of The Turn of the Screw that the idea of a ghost is synonymous to that of a servant, subconsciously making the two lower-class workers of Bly more vulnerable to believe that the ghosts were real; in other words, servants were ghosts....
The story starts off with a rainy, gloomy,candle light or fire light setting, very typical opening features of a story written in the gothic genre. Divorce. How can that one word bring up so much emotion in us? That simple word to some may bring feelings of shame and disgust, while to others it can represent a fresh start and safety from a bad situation. While it would be easy to look at this topic and simply say that it is right or wrong all across the board, it feels inadequate. Every divorce is unique and specific to those within that relationships and could be caused by an array of reasons, so to offer a blanket statement felt insufficient. After looking at this topic in depth and seeing the effect that it can have on both those in the relationship, and those around the, I was able to arrive at a conclusion. According to recent statistics, there are more divorces now than ever before. At the rate things are going, the divorce rate may soon surpass the marriage rate. There are many reasons for such a high divorce rate, but one of the main ones is that people do not realize what they are getting themselves into when they marry. Couples do not realize that marriage is a job that must be worked at continuously in order for it to go well. McKinley goes on to write that that is nearly 2,400 divorces per day, 16,800 divorces per week and 876,000 divorces a year. Sometimes, it’s the way of life we can’t control people’s marriage and make it a better relationship, but we certainly want to make it less tragic to the ones who will get affected. The main cause of divorce is very simple it is either the lack of romantic feelings or cheating on the husband or wife. Since divorce is an ongoing condition and has been increasing lately, people have begun to look at it as a pathetic thing and normal. Regardless of the causes, no one wins in divorce because it impacts negatively in many ways. Therefore, divorce mostly negatively affects the children, wife, and husband in a family.
Divorce is an emotionally painful experience for everyone involved, especially toward the children in the family. But yet, the law officials continue fabricating laws and devising regulations to make it harder for spouses seeking a divorce or separation to get one. The family has to deal with child custody and support, spousal support such as counseling, property distribution, and a possible name change. Divorce is not only a financial struggle for the families involved, but it is also a nuisance between family relationships.

Bridget Burke Ravizza wrote the article, “Selling Ourselves on the Marriage Market” and is an assistant professor of religious studies at St. Norbert College, De Pere, WI. After talking with an unnamed group of college students, she discovers that “These college students have grown up in a society in which nearly half of all marriages end in divorce.” She also reveals “they are fearful that their future marriages will go down that path, and some question whether lifelong commitment can—or should—be made at all.” Furthermore, Ravizza finds that “students are bombarded with messages about sexuality and relationships—indeed messages about themselves—that seem to undermine authentic relationships.” Simply put, culture has accepted divorce as a “normal” thing and has already begun to affect the next generations. The surveyed students are so fearful of divorce, they are, in essence, afraid of marriage as well. They even go to the extreme of avoiding divorce by saying they may not get married at all to prevent the “undermining of an authentic relationship.”

The protagonist doesn’t need to hold on to his memory, because she knows he is safe and in good hands with the rest of the family. First when she knows her father is safe, she can get closure, and not only let go of him, but the entire family. The story ends with her saying: “I’ll se you then” (line 185) and her father replying: “you know where we are” (line 186), as if he reassures her that she will rejoin them when she dies.
Love is the number one reason for marriage, even having Valentine’s Day to celebrate love. Yet Americans for Divorce Reform (ADR) estimate that, “Probably, 40 or possibly even 50 percent of marriages will end in divorce if current trends continue" (Colleen). The ADR also shows the divorce rates between Christians and non-Christians are indistinguishable. Even worse, Christians divorcing their spouses are distorting the Bible in order to justify their actions. Christians must be called to a higher standard in regards to divorce, and they must stop twisting the Bible to appease their conscience.
Since the creation of mankind, humans all over the world have fallen in love and believe that they have found “the one.” People get married and realize that it is not always “happily ever after.” A large percentage of couples are unable to maintain their relationship, because of this, they choose divorce. Many spouses, believe that this is the best solution to deal with problems between each other. However, many people think carefully before getting entangled into marriage. Nevertheless, divorce rates still continue to increase to this very day. It certainly looks as if divorces occur more now than they did 20 years ago. There are three causes of divorce: changing of a woman’s household status, financial situations, and lack of communication.
