The gods in Greek mythology played a significant role in the human lives. They were the strongest, the most fearsome, more troublesome but also the most compassionated figures. They were viewed as the most powerful beings on earth and nothing could stop them, aside from others Gods. Everything that happened on earth was a result the storms, thunders, floods, plague, diseases and drought caused by the gods. They also controlled positive things such as rain and prosperity. The Greeks had ultimate respect for the gods. They show their admiration by doing rituals including prayers, sacrifices and celebrations to devote to the gods that they feared and loved in order to live in peace in the story “Oedipus the king”. Oedipus trying to do the right thing he searched for the culprit to put an end to the curse. He questions a lot of his citizen’s, including Tiresias who was a blind prophet. Tiresias told Oedipus that he as the one that killed Laius. He was not happy with that news and he thought they were trying a skim to overthrown him. His wife Jocasta tells him not to believe in the prophecy, because they have been wrong in the past. Then she tells him about the prophecy, that King Laius was supposed to die at the hand of his son, where the three road meet, and she was supposed to sleep with her own son, but that did not happen. Oedipus end up finding out that he was the one that killed king Laius and bedded his mother Jocasta. When Jocasta realized that she had bedded his son, she takes her own life by hanging herself leaving Oedipus to find her hanging from a celling. He couldn’t take the pain end blinded himself by stabbing himself in the eye with a pair of pins, and exiles himself from Thebes. The Gods play a major role in dictating the future of Oedipus, even though he tries to fight his fate, and ends up doing the exact same thing that the oracles had already told him. He was the leader of the other gods and the ruler of Mount Olympus. Zeus was the son of Cronus, and his mother was the sister and wife of Cronus Rhea. Zeus was the last child of Cronus and Rhea, Cronus was warned that one of his sons would eventually overthrow him, and as a result he decided to swallow all of his children. To avoid that, Rhea sent Zeus to the Island of Create where he was raised while planning to kill his father. He killed his father by allowing Cronus to swallow him, while he had a potion that would cause Cronus to throw up his brothers Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia. Alongside his brothers, Zeus fought and become the supreme ruler of gods, he then rewarded his brothers by making Poseidon the God of the Seas. Mortals must respect the powers above them that cannot be controlled. The gods rule over destiny, nature, and justice, and need to be recognized and worshipped for the powerful beings as they are. Throughout the play, Oedipus is faced with the truth and fails to acknowledge it. He is first told by the drunk at the party, but he dismisses it as just something said by an ignorant drunk. He then visits the oracle and is told his fate determined by the gods and believes he can escape it by fleeing to Thebes. On his way he carries out the first part of the fate by killing his father. He then makes it to Thebes and marries Jocasta, unknowingly fulfilling the fate. Teiresias finally tells Oedipus the horrible truth, but Oedipus calls him a liar and fails to recognize the truth again. When Oedipus finally figures that what the oracle, drunk, and Teiresias was all true, he cannot handle it and blinds himself while Jocasta kills herself.

Oedipus Rex is a Greek play written by Sophocles. The play is set in Thebes; Thebes is infected with a plague that is killing its crops and unborn children. This plague is caused by the prophecy. The prophecy states that Oedipus would kill his father and wed his mother. Laius threw out Oedipus when he was a baby to avoid this fate, but he failed because Oedipus was not killed. Oedipus was raised as a prince in Corinth. One day he was told the prophecy and feared that he would kill his father Polybus. While running away from Corinth to escape the prophecy, Oedipus killed Laius. When Oedipus arrived in Thebes, he freed the people from the sphinx. He was named king and married Jocasta. Towards the end of the play, Oedipus finds out that he had fulfilled the prophecy and is exiled from Thebes.
Ancient Greek religion was a polytheistic religion that believed in many gods and goddesses. To Greeks, these gods and goddesses would be able to control everything. Each god or goddess had his or her own distinct personality and territory. “Greek myths explained the origins of the gods and their individual relations with mankind” (Hemingway). Unlike current religions, like Christianity and Judaism, Greek gods were not known for being moral or being truly good or evil. Many of the Greek gods and goddesses were disorganized and self-contradicting. Although this was apparent to the Greeks, the Greeks believed that their religion was to brighten their own lives, rather than give them godlike guidance. The best example of a self-contradicting Greek god is Zeus – father of all gods and humans (Cunningham and Reich 32-33).
If Oedipus had not been so determined to escape and prevent the prophecy, he would not have fulfilled it. Possibly, he was doomed to fulfill the prophecy because he believed he could avoid it. Nevertheless, his fate was sealed by his actions of pride and determination. His pride of conquering the Sphinx led him to the marriage of Jocasta, his mother. When avenging Jocasta’s previous husband, and his true father, King Laius’ death, he was blinded by his pride to the concept that perhaps he was the murderer. Not knowing the truth, he cursed himself to an “evil death-in-life of misery”. Of course at that time, Oedipus failed to realize his connections to Jocasta and Laius, but recognition of the truth would bring him to his eventual suffrage.
In conclusion, the gods, Apollo in particular, played a major part in the overall circumstances of Oedipus. Oedipus’ destruction influenced his family, and thus the gods demolished an entire family. As a result of this terrible destruction of a man’s life and his family, the reader would consider the gods guilty and evil. The gods followed four steps to destroy Oedipus completely. First, they controlled his fate and led him to murder his father, and marry his mother. They provided people with the power of prophecy to make Laius and Jocasta give away their child. Not only that, but Apollo’s oracle told Oedipus about his terrible fate that involve his parents to make him move to Thebes. Finally, they send a plague to the Thebans for not punishing the murderer of their king, which results in Oedipus’ exile or execution. Oedipus, the wise king, has never been destroyed by an evil man, but he was totally destroyed by what they call merciful, just gods.
Oedipus discovers that the child of king Laius, and queen Jocasta was sent away to die as a child. As he seeks for the reason for this child being sent away he stumbles upon the fact that the child was prophesized to kill his father and he would lay with his mother. From this he became suspicious that the child may be him. He realized that while he had been considered a hero at the same time he had been doing what the oracle told him he would do.

For Oedipus, prophecy is not the main source of his fall towards society; rather, his hubris blinds himself from recognizing his personal sin in the world, thus leading to his demise. Sophocles even skillfully uses a metaphor through the words “ as led by a guide” to further explain the “supernatural being” that ultimately decides the tragic fate of the family of Oedipus. In addition, through the death of Jocasta, the reader is immediately attuned of Oedipus’ raging moment of violence and will be petrified by the overwhelming power of the gods, thus realizing the importance of being cautious before making a final choice. Indeed, after an individual settles on a decision, the gods take control of the person’s fate, hurling numerous consequences to him if he makes the wrong decision. Moreover, as Oedipus suddenly becomes the unintended victim of the gods through his sinful decision to execute Laius, he is forced to relinquish his predominate impetus for pridefulness in exchange for a heart of deep realization and forgiveness. At the end of the play, Oedipus sacrifices everything in order to remove his guilt through the consequences of his atrocious actions witnessed by the gods. Had fate not intervened, the chances of marrying Jocasta would have been small since there is an enourmous number of people and places to go.
