William Shakespeare uses an enigmatic approach in his 20th sonnet. The sonnet both recognizes the author’s love and admiration for his subject and displays the boy’s prowess. In the final lines the poet reveals either his potentially romantic interest or platonic infatuation. The poem employs considerable figurative language and multiple interpretations for lines which add to the ambiguous nature of the piece. Shakespeare’s syntax and organization of his lines helps assert the importance of specific phrases in the work. By placing “hast thou” (2) on the beginning of the second line, the author changes the emphasis of the line that precedes it: “A woman’s face, with nature’s own hand painted” (1). Choosing not to start with a direct address to his subject, Shakespeare introduces a comparison before revealing the subject. This syntactic choice highlights the “woman’s face” (1) rather than the subject and allows “Hast thou”(2) to act as a transition from the feminine analogy to the masculine subject. The word order of the first line emphasizes the “woman’s face” (1), with the personification of nature following. I interpret this personification of nature in two ways, the first refers to the subject’s natural beauty without any makeup, while the second implies that the nature goddess painted the man’s face herself. Because of the word order and choice, the poem initiates an air of ambiguity that continues throughout the sonnet. At the end of the first quatrain, the writer uses enjambment in order to intensify and visually replicate a phrase. Shakespeare’s use of enjambment regarding a woman’s heart emphasizes the end of the line: “a woman’s gentle heart, but not yet acquainted / With shifting change” (ll. 3-4) accentuates the ... ... middle of paper ... ...akespeare’s diction allows the seventh line multiple interpretations. Regardless, this line acts as a statement of the young man’s power, whether its be his authoritative power or his ability to change the color of the faces around him. The use of end rhyme heavily emphasizes the power that this young man has over people. By linking “gazeth” (6) and “amazeth” (9) Shakespeare connects the powerful gaze that the young man possesses to the impact that such a stare causes. By exaggerating the extent of the young man’s effect on others Shakespeare makes his subject seem all the more alluring, blending delicate qualities with commanding ones. This poem accomplishes a considerable feat, conveying the emotions of the author without explicitly stating his inner motivation. Clearly the author adores this young man, but where this admiratiation stems from remains hidden.
The sonnets written by Shakespeare in the Elizabethan era were written to challenge the unrealistic view of women in the Petrarchan sonnets, and this is visible through Shakespeare’s use of the English Sonnet. In “Sonnet,” Billy Collins satirizes the classical sonnet’s volume to illustrate love in only “.fourteen lines.” (1). Collins’s poem subsists as a “Sonnet,” though there exists many differences in it, countering the customarily conventional structure of a sonnet. Like Collins’s “Sonnet,” Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 130” also faces incongruities with the classic sonnet form as he satirizes the concept of ideal beauty that was largely a convention of writings and art during the Elizabethan era. Although these poems venture through different techniques to appear individually different from the classic sonnet, the theme of love makes the poems analogous.

It is remarkable, from a historical point of view, and raises intriguing, though unanswerable, questions about the nature of Shakespeare's relationship to the young man who inspired these sonnets. Given 16th-Century England's censorious attitudes towards homosexuality, it might seem surprising that Will's beloved is male. However, in terms of the conventions of the poetry of idealized, courtly love, it makes surprisingly little difference whether Will's beloved is male or female; to put the matter more strongly, in some ways it makes more sense for the beloved to be male.
This poem speaks of a love that is truer than denoting a woman's physical perfection or her "angelic voice." As those traits are all ones that will fade with time, Shakespeare exclaims his true love by revealing her personality traits that caused his love. Straying away from the dazzling rhetoric, this Shakespearean poem projects a humane and friendly impression and elicits laughter while expressing a truer love. Shakespeare's sonnets are a romantic and charming series of poems. His use of rhyme and passionate, eloquent language serve to illuminate his strong feelings. These techniques were probably the most fluent way for such a writer as him to express the immeasurable love that he obviously felt for his mysterious lady. Examining the numerous ways Shakespeare found to describe it, the reader believes that this love was undoubtedly lasting and authentic. He often made heart-felt comments about his emotions that could also suit lovers in the present day. Because of this, and the fact that people read them yet, Shakespeare's sonnets are timeless and universal, just like the concept of love itself.
Shakespeare's comedies can be recognized in terms of plot, structure and characters. We can see that Shakespearean comedies follow the same structural pattern, a basic plot on which the play is based. For example, a key feature of all comedies is that they depend upon the resolution of their plots. However, Shakespeare's comedies are distinguishable, as some are classed as comic dramas and others as romantic comedies. In comic drama, there is usually a motif of a place where reality and the unreal merge, the roles of characters are reversed and identities are mistaken or lost. This place may take on the form of a feast or celebration, or it may be presented as a place segregated from the normal society, such as the wood in A Midsummer Night's Dream. When scenes are set in this place, the ordinary rules of life and society do not apply. There is always an experience of chaos, which must be resolved in order for the play to become a true comedy.
He revolves around her cheeks and mouth, as he has not “seen roses damasked, red and white, / but no such see I in her cheeks” (Shakespeare 5-6). The picture the speaker is painting is one of his mistress having a dull complexion with an undesirable texture. His vivid use of imagery further aids in his satirical mocking of the conventional sonnets falsely comparing women to grand things, which in this case to a soft red rose. In the second quatrain, the speakers tone starts to change as the langue he uses to describe his mistress differs. His language in the second and third quatrain’s is more euphonious when he describes his mistress, indicating that he feels for her, and the flaws that he lists are only skin deep. Following the depiction of her cheeks the speaker goes on listing her flaws, one after the other; he comments how the “breath” (Shakespeare 8) of his “mistress reeks,” (Shakespeare 8) to her her “dun” (Shakespeare 3) breast and her displeasing “damasked” (Shakespeare 5) skin. It seems that the speaker is doing the exact opposite of a conventional love poem as he’s not placing the beauty of a mistress on a pedestal, rather he lowers her in beauty in the eye of reader by describing, in detail, her lack of beauty, aiding in his ridiculing of the conventional love
