Generation X is a group of individuals that was born in the years of 1964-1980. This very interesting generation is a generation that is often forgotten. Reasoning being is because of how small this group is. During the time that this group of people was growing up their parents, the Baby Boomers were at large in the workplace. Layoffs were on the rise and the job market was very competitive. This led to one of the nicknames of this generation which is, “Latchkey Kids” (Zemke 2013). This term was instituted in order to define what was happening in the home of this generation. Due to their parents having to work hard in order to keep their jobs as well as food on the table, the children were often given keys in order to come home from school and take care of their siblings. Surely this type of parenting was not pleasant to either the parent or the child; however the money had to be made.
After dealing with the struggle of focusing on school children would come home from school and help with homework, cooking, cleaning, run errands or whatever the family needed. This also led to parents missing out on some of the extra curriculum activity that their children were in and also bonding time with their child. The people of Generation X are a very independent and strong willed group of people. Some of the people who grew up in this Generation missed out on their childhood due to the responsibility that was on their shoulders. However, the money flow had to be steady in order for the family to keep their heads above water.
As mentioned earlier, layoffs were starting to increase. Some businesses did not do as well as they thought that they would do. Parents were frustrated and confused as why the job market had falle...

...chkey kids.” I can appreciate my senior citizens more because some of them fought in wars for my honor. I can appreciate the people who went through the civil rights movement, which are the Baby Boomers. All of these generations bring certain uniqueness to the world and each one should be appreciated for it.

The Generation Divide And The Generations Essay

- The Generation Divide The “Generation Divide” (Biro, 2013) is a challenging problem for the leadership in today’s culture. The gaps between these generations are a concern organizations are confronted with. Today’s workforce includes four generations spanning more than 60 years in age (Cogin, 2012). Strategies aimed at attracting, retaining, and engaging employees of all ages are strategic concerns that employers are focusing on (Cogin, 2012). This paper will address the strengths of the four generations of American workers that exist in today’s workplace, similarities and differences, and how to resolve collaboration efforts between them (Mayden, 2014)....   [tags: Generation Y, Generation X, Cultural generations]

The Generation, Generation Y, The Lost Generation Essay

- ... A common issue for Generation Y is the expectation that we should, almost instantly, act and live like adults once we become of a certain age. Robin Marantz Henig says there are scientific claims that “brains are not fully developed until the mid-twenties…” (Evans, n.d.) That being said, we may act as though we are mature adults but mentally we are not fully prepared for adulthood. Along with the expectation to act and live like adults, many of us receive no real guidance to the “real world.” Personally, I believe that nobody can really prepare you for that experience, but I do think that there are preparations and advice that we can use as tools to help us along that journey....   [tags: Generation Y, Generation X, Strauss and Howe]

The Generation Of The Millennial Generation Essay

- The Baby Boomers have grown older and the new generation, Generation X, Generation Y, also known as Millennials, are taking their place. Why has the world taken a huge interest in the Millennial generation. Millennials are people born between the years 1980 and 2000. They grew up being “coddled and helicoptered,” entertained by 24-hour TV. Sam Tanenhaus of The New York Times, writes that Millennials were “fussed over, dissected by psychologists, demographers, [and] trend-spotters.” Millennials were brought up using digital technology and mass media....   [tags: Generation Y, Generation X, Demographics]

Essay about Generation Y: The Dumbest Generation

- Have you ever wondered if our generation is the dumbest. Well, there’s some evidence to prove so. Generation ‘Y’ is considered to be the dumbest generation of all. This is based on numerous experiments, polls, surveys, etc. While everything else in this world is rising, intellect of each generation is falling. With the ignorance of facts, by choice, and lack of some education, Generation ‘Y’ is considered to be the dumbest generation. “Ignorance of facts” simply means that the education is there but this generation just chooses not to use it....   [tags: Millennial Generation]

The Generation And Generation X Essay

- ... The chain reaction of criticisms leads back to the fact that Millennials have grown up “mutated to adapt to their environment” (Stein). Their families are more prosperous than ever before, meaning they are able to provide a higher standard of living in comparison to previous generations. Does that mean they have an advantage. Yes, but it does not mean it has solved all of their problems. As many older generations have criticized Millennials for their privileges, they also deserve credit for surviving through “tough times” as well....   [tags: Generation Y, Generation X, Demographics]

- ... Or, people that the system of labor cannot or will not use. Some argue that some blame can be placed on them. Individualism can have its negatives. Gen Xers believed it was easiest to do nothing. This can be bad because its creates patterns and these patterns involve doing nothing so no actual change to society occurs. Some say that they are to blame. However, these negative connotations are not fair. As I mentioned, the people of generation X were extremely independent. In regards to institutions such as the state, the church, or their employers, they never trusted them....   [tags: Generation X, Generation Y, Demographics]

The Millennial Generation And The Generation Essay

- Susan Smith, a critic, states that the millennial generation is lazy, entitled, obsessed with technology and care less about working hard. Smith believes that our current society will be destined for failure in the hands of the current millennial generation. Smith is not the only one who believes that the millennial generation will lead our current society to failure. Yet the same labels have been said to the previous generation and the generation before them. Essay about Generation Z : The Boomerang Generation

- Generation Z is complicated to some people because it’s not like previous generations seen. My generation is Generation Z also known as “The Boomerang Generation”. This term was given to this generation because of how frequent young adults chose to share a home with their parents after previously living on their own thus boomeranging back home. My generation got its name by characteristics displayed. Characteristics such as childish, apathetic, petty, lazy, emotional, weird and incompetent Types of characteristics like these become more problematic when social media, independency, and relationships are involved....   [tags: Generation Y, Strauss and Howe, Generation Z]

Essay on Generation Y And Generation Z

- ... Generation Y is not exactly willing to work hard because “Boomers have destroyed Generation Y’s incentive for hard work and sacrifice.” (Evans, 2016, page 199) In order to aid Generation Y they mostly need a helping hand to take that step into adulthood, in my opinion. I would categorize myself more along the lines of Generation Z. This generation was born between the 1990s and 2015. Generation Z is more technologically inclined. This could be viewed as a negative aspect, but it also gives Generation Z the advantage of being able to communicate with people from all over with the connect that social media provides....   [tags: Generation Y, Strauss and Howe, Generation Z]

The Generation Of Generation X Essay

- ... “Furthermore, technology and societies have been subjected to substantial change throughout the past decades. The technological improvements in the field of reproduction have managed to prolong women’s fertility, meaning many women decide to have a child after 30, when a steady income in a respectable job is guaranteed” (Zavrnsnik, para. 10). With this considered, the thought of Generation Y being ‘lazy’ in the family department is immediately discredited. Advances in modern medicine allow women to have children after 30, so while it may have been common for younger women to drop everything and have a family very early in Generation X, it isn’t unheard of to wait a little longer to make...   [tags: Generation Y, Generation X, Strauss and Howe]
