Friendship is like a flower. It must work hard to spread its roots to obtain nutrients, build a strong stem to maintain balance, and develop a bud to fight against the elements. All of these steps are important and a flower cannot bloom until each phase is complete. Much like the phases of friendship. Understanding human imperfection while spreading roots within a relationship gives the opportunity to find the important nourishment. Fighting against the urge of human prejudice verses self-sustainment creates a balance only maintained by a strong stem. And being exposed to the struggles such as losing a friend helps the bud battle against the elements. The balance in a friendship can be hard at times when views conflict, for instance when a very controversial president election is occurring. Being at a college populated mostly by students that utterly despise Trump can be a little overwhelming on occasions. Especially when a friend says outright anyone who votes for Trump is selfish and must hate all people besides the upper white middle class. This prejudice though not directed at any individual caused some inner turmoil in my decision on whether to remain friends with this person. But by balancing my own views and ego I achieved in sustaining our friendship and we built past that conflict and on to other discussions.
Gilgamesh is known for his strong friendship with Enkidu. When Enkidu passed, it was as if his entire world fell apart because now he too was looking mortality in the face and he was scared. “How can I rest, how can I be at peace? What my brother is that shall I be when I’m dead.” It was hard to confront the future of his own demise without Enkidu, but when Gilgamesh conquered that inner fear it made him stronger. Plato knew that friendships could only develop when imperfection wasn’t considered a hindrance and other roots could make up for the lack of nourishment. Patel knows that to build a friendship one must maintain balance with their inner ideas and the egos they portray just like a stem must be balanced before it can grow taller. Gilgamesh learned the hard way that one must face the elements head on just like a flower bud in order to survive and grow stronger.
