A. Specific Aims
Arsenic is a common element that has been part of the human civilization for more than 2000 years. It has been used as medicine in the western and eastern world in ways that would not be sanctioned today. In modern times Arsenic is used in agricultural, medical use and industrial use. Although it is considered a toxic compound in high dose, humans are exposed to the compound every day. Currently there is no comprehensive report detailing levels in our accumulation of Arsenic in human body thru the food industry and their effects on health of individuals. This proposal is to research the arsenic levels found in our food source from poultry and grains to the human body. This

Arsenic can be found in most drinking waters and foods. The amount that is accumulated is limited due to the body excreting it from the body. The arsenic that is not excreted may cause harm to bodily functions if it above a threshold. Arsenic is very reactive and may form more toxic analogs. Arsenic toxicity shows up rapidly and must be treated with chelation therapy quickly or face permanent damage. It is unable to be detected without equipment in food, because it does not change a foods texture or change the taste of food. ...f inorganic arsenic may be a danger to human health. The exposure to arsenic is higher for people who work with arsenic, also for people who drink significant amounts of wine. People living in houses that contain wood preservatives, and live on farms where arsenic pesticides have been applied in the past are highly exposure.
The proposed research will identify gene expression traits of breast cancer cells chronically exposed to arsenic during different periods of exposure. These results will allow us to develop gene profiles and identify arsenic-associated genes. By identifying arsenic-associated genes, we can determine if these genes are involved in molecular functions and biological processes. This study can assist future studies of mammary tumors with elevated arsenic levels and will provide insight into breast cancer progression due to the accumulation of arsenic. Our proposed research will demonstrate the impact of arsenic on the estrogen receptor and on breast cancer carcinogenesis. We hope this study will highlight the importance of studying the effects of prolonged arsenic exposure on breast cancer.

Arsenic (As) is a lethal metalloid found in rocks, sediments, water, soil and air. It enters into the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems through a combination of natural processes such as volcanism, process of weathering and biological activity, as well as a result of anthropogenic (Human made) activities. The food methods used in present day food production has allowed more exposure to inorganic chemicals in the human body. FCMs also expose people to enviromental carcinogens and endocrine discomposing compounds. Pesticides are sprayed on antibiotics used on poultry, hormones injected into cattle, sheep and hogs, and crops These contaminants involuntarily become a part of the consumers body.
Plasma was considered as the most important part of human blood, which carries out most of the function in relation to transport. Fluids is the major constituent of plasma, with an estimated total protein concentration of about 7.0-7.5 g/dl, as the solid component in plasma, that contain a complex mixture of different proteins which are mainly glycoprotein and lipoproteins. The concentration of plasma protein is largely occupied by Albumin, which is about 3.4-4.7 g/dl as the major protein; this protein will be discourse in further details, (Murray et al 2003). Plasma protein plays a role as biomarkers in diagnosing human diseases, due to their functions as dynamic interface for molecular transport in the body even though, their determination is very difficult because it contain almost 3700 different proteins as found in the literature, (Manley and Gailer, 2009). It was well known from early research, (Himmelhoch, et al, 1966) that plasma protein contain a minute amount of metals, and different technique were used to determine distribution, which will explained in more details. These metals are essential for many function in relation to good health of a living organism, 15 trace element found in plasma were considered of great importance in this aspect which includes but not limited to: Fe, Zn, Cu, Se, Co, I, K, Na, Mg, Mn, Ca, as reported by (Muniz, et al 2013). However, among these trace element Cu and Zn where considered as the most important of all the trace elements in coordinating health activities and were found to bound one metal per protein.
