I never knew how hard the word friendship was to define until someone asked me what does friendship mean to me and how would I describe the word friendship. By definition friendship is a mutual affection between two or more people, but I have learned the meaning of friendship is defined differently by different people. When I think of my friends and friendship I think of someone who I had an instant connection with, someone I could share my common interests with, and someone who understands me in ways most don’t. Back in ancient times friendships meant something totally different, now as Deresiewicz explains in his story boyfriends and girlfriends call each other their best friend and teenagers call their parents their best friends, so in the modern world friendship has taken on an entirely new meaning. I met my childhood friend in kindergarten, I remember being really shy and I spilled juice on my dress I was wearing, and this little girl approaches me and starts helping me clean my dress off, she tells me that my dress is pretty and that she has one similar to it, from that point forth we became best friends and nothing has changed that over the years but we always remembered how we met. When someone asks me about my friends I start to almost instantly think of how I met each and every one of my friends and how something as little as a spillage on my dress at 5 years old or a divorce managed to bring me close to the two most important people in my life. Friendship in a lot of ways is awkward because you meet a complete stranger and have similar interests or differences and think wow this person is awesome, that’s how it all begins. In a way friendship is where relationships begin most of the time, that’s at least how it began for me. I started out being best friends with the little boy who lived below me, I was three years old and he was five years old and I can remember us playing together and being the best of friends over the years and when I was 19 I married him and we had two children

Since men act in ways that bring their lives happiness, it is generally found that friendship brings happiness; however different kinds of friendship bring different types of happiness. Regardless of the type of friendship, what can be agreed and accepted is that the best type of friendship will be virtuous. “[G]oodwill, when it is reciprocal being friendship… To be friends, then, they must be mutually recognized as bearing goodwill and wishing well to each other” (Nicomachean Ethics, 8.2, 1155b-1156a 34- 5). Friendship requires reciprocal well-wishing, and mutual awareness based on lovable qualities, such as the good, the pleasant and the useful. By analyzing these three kinds of friendship, it will be proven that the friendship is a virtue or rather a good action.
